Macy Gray covers up for new ablum

After scoring a Grammy and selling 15 million albums worldwide, soul singer Macy Gray took a break from the music scene.

But now she's back and she's taking her unique raspy voice in a new direction.

For Gray's sixth album "Covered" the singer put her own spin on 10 of her favorite songs.

SOUNDBITE: Macy Gray, singer, saying:

"I came up with this idea to do covers of famous rock songs, modern ones, because I figured if I did a solo album of R&B, everyone would expect that already, and it turns out I'm a huge rock and roll fan anyway, so I just picked ten of my favorite songs, then we went in and totally redid them, it was pretty awesome, it was a great, great experience, we had a ball."

While Gray names Lady Gaga, Wiz Khalifa and The Black Keys as some of the artists she admires, Kanye West is the one person she's eager to work with.

SOUNDBITE: Macy Gray, singer, saying:

"As an artist, he has some really great things to say about his perspective on things, and I like his personality, I like his arrogance. I think the world needs people like that, that aren't scared to say what's for real, how they really feel, you know."

Gray's new album hit shelves the first week of April.
