Banda takes presidential reins in Malawi

Prominent women's rights campaigner, Joyce Banda became the first female head of state in southern Africa when she was sworn in as the new President of Malawi.

The 61-year-old had served as vice president under Bingu wa Mutharika who died on Thursday. She succeeded under the terms of the constitution and has the support of top officials and the army.
