Syrian state television showed President Bashar al-Assad touring the Baba Amr neighbourhood of Homs on Tuesday (March 27).

The district was severely damaged during the fierce month-long fighting between the government troops and the rebels, but was reclaimed by Assad's forces earlier this month after 26 days of heavy bombardment.

Assad, accompanied by a group of officials, toured the neighbourhood inspecting the damage and giving instructions for its speedy reconstruction.

Activists say hundreds of civilians and opponents of Assad were killed in opposition areas of Homs in February by army shelling and snipers.

A spokesman for peace envoy Kofi Annan, representing the United Nations and the Arab League, said on Tuesday Assad had accepted basic terms of a peace plan that calls for national dialogue and does not hinge on his agreement to leave office and give up power.
