Jason Russell is in a California hospital after an incident his group said stemmed from the emotional toll of the past weeks.

Russell is the director of a video that's gone viral urging the arrest of Ugandan rebel Joseph Kony.

San Diego police say officers were alerted by reports of a man behaving oddly.

SOUNDBITE: ANDRA BROWN, SAN DIEGO POLICE SPOKESWOMAN, SAYING (English):

"Several residents in the neighbourhood were very concerned about a male that they described as a white male in his late 20s that was acting strangely. There were various stages of undress that were described, he was wearing underwear, that he was naked, that kind of thing, that he was running into the roadway, he was interfering with traffic, screaming and that kind of thing. Officers responded to the welfare check, did contact with the man and there was no problem for the police department. However, during the evaluation with him we did learn that we probably needed to take care of him so the officers detained him and transported him to a local medical facility for further evaluation and treatment."

Russell's 30-minute YouTube video has been viewed by tens of millions of people.

It's intended to alert the world to the atrocities committed by Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army including kidnapping children and forcing them to fight.

A statement by Russell's campaign group Invisible Children said he was suffering from exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition.
