Why would someone who favors civil rights and liberty join the Republican Party?

I often have discussions with folks, some times heated discussions, about why a civil liberty advocate or any person who cares about civil rights would join the Republican party. I have seen a lot of propaganda that implicates Republicans throughout history as being specifically racist, and anti-civil rights. I have also seen a bunch of propaganda that implicates Republicans as being responsible for the national debt, etc.
So, I had to go do the research myself to clear the air. For me, if I had only two parties to choose from and I had to choose in order to vote (for primaries as an example), then I would register as a Republican between the choices of Republican vs. Democrat.
Historically Republicans have a much better record than Democrats do in regards to fiscal responsibility and civil rights (which I believe are interconnected).
