Thirty-one prisoners and guards are injured after riots break out in Sri Lanka's biggest maximum security prison. Army soldiers and police commandos used tear gas and live ammunition to contain the violence.
At least 31 prison guards and inmates were injured when rioting broke out on Tuesday at a Sri Lankan prison.
Media reports say rioting broke out on Tuesday morning when prison guards were conducting a raid inside the Colombo Welikada prison.
Welikada holds hundreds of suspected Tamil Tiger rebels.
Prisoners then set fire to the kitchen and a building housing records and documents of the inmates.
Army soldiers and police commandos used tear gas and fired live ammunition to contain the violence.
Twenty-six inmates and 5 prison guards were injured but doctors have said none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Television pictures showed smoke billowing out from one of the buildings.
Other clips showed prisoners taking refuge on the rooftop.
The Welikada is a maximum security prison and is the country's largest.
