Chilean students clash with police in a long-running dispute over education.
The protesters say the system is profit-motivated and of a poor standard.
They've now been joined by sympathetic demonstrators across the region.
In Colombia the protests were colourful and often musical.
(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) KAREN CASALLAS, STUDENT PROTESTER, SAYING:
"We have come together for the same cause, which is free education, so that you can study without having to work while you are studying, so that you can study the career you want, so that you don't have to be in debt to finish your degree."
Students also took to the streets in Argentina, Peru and beyond in what some called a Latin-American day for defending educational rights.
