Bus Crash in Hubei Province Kills 16

A bus crash in a mountainous area of central China on Saturday has left 16 people dead. 19 people survived the crash, many with serious injuries.

At least 16 people are dead and 19 injured after a bus plunged into a ravine in Hubei Province on Saturday.

State-run media reports the bus was carrying 35 passengers when it crashed through railings on the road and plunged into the Xiangxi River.

Television pictures showed rescuers helping survivors climb back up to the road holding onto a rope.

Many of the survivors were severely injured and were sent to the hospital for further medical treatment.

One passenger spoke about the ordeal.

[Long Yonglei, Passenger]:
"I was asleep when the bus fell into the ravine, then I found myself at the edge of the river. A lot of people came to rescue us. Many of them were local residents."

CCTV reports that local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the deadly accident.
