After the dramatic events that destroyed the country in the 1990s, Rwanda was reconstructed in a remarkable way. Determinedly forward-looking, the country registered an average economic growth of 6 % over twelve years (7,5 % in 2010). Rwanda has the ambition of joining the group of emerging countries in 2020. A small enclosed country, Rwanda nevertheless plays an important role at the regional and continental level. Rwanda is member of the Community of East Africa, of the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF), and since November, 2009, of the Commonwealth.

Paul Kagame was elected President of the Republic in the universal suffrage in 2003. He began his second mandate in August, 2010.
