Some politicians are working hard for their communities. One such politician is Australian Federal Minister Greg Hunt. He is walking hundreds of miles to raise awareness for children suffering with Autism. Our reporter joins the walk to find out more.

Australian Federal MP, Greg Hunt is walking over 300 miles visiting fifty-two schools to bring awareness to the plight of children with Autism.

[Greg Hunt, Federal Member of Parliament]:
“Autism is much more prevalent than people understand - it's probably 1 in 150.”

Autism is a social and communication disorder. A child with autism is often anxious, has poor attention and motivation, responds unusually to many different stimuli and is seen as being different.

[Greg Hunt, Federal Member of Parliament]:
“With a little bit of help in the right place and the right time, kids can have their futures transformed. Wow! there is not much else we can do that is more important than giving the kids that opportunity.”

Education is a basic human right but even in western countries such as Australia, children with Autism are being neglected through lack of understanding, knowledge and educational support.

[Lewis Walton, Autistic Student]:
“Having absolutely nobody to talk to about anything and constantly being put down. I was hated for absolutely no reason and I never got a chance to excel.”

[Marilyn Myszka, Parent of Autistic Child]:
“People don't understand, they look at the behaviour of the child, they don't understand the disability and the impact it has, not just on the child with Autism but the whole family.”

The Australian Government has committed US$200 million for the four years up to June 2012 to deliver the Helping Children with Autism package, which dries up in 2012.

Greg Hunt addresses the issue in Parliament this week.
