Residents in a six-story apartment building in northeast China had a rude awakening early Thursday morning when their building started to vibrate. They managed to escape just before one side of it collapsed.

One side of a six-story apartment building collapsed on Thursday in Harbin, in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

Residents in five of the apartments in Nangang District were woken by sudden vibrations at about 4:30 a.m. They managed to get out of the building before it collapsed.

Officials say nearby construction work caused the collapse.

[Li Sichuan, Deputy Director of Nangang District]:
"The collapse was caused by the nearby foundation dug for another building, which made the building tilt down. As this building was built in 1970s, with precast slabs, the slabs would fall apart from the main structure when the building tilts."

No casualties have been reported by the local government.
