The world's longest ocean bridge opens to traffic today. The 26-mile long bridge has taken four years to complete and links the eastern city of Qingdao with two offshore islands.

Jiaozhou Bay Bridge—the world's longest ocean bridge—opened to traffic Thursday morning in the eastern city of Qingdao in Shandong Province.

Spanning 26 miles across Jiaozhou Bay, the bridge connects Qingdao City with the two offshore islands of Huangdao and Hongdao.

The sea bridge is the longest of its kind in the world. It cost more than 1.5 billion U.S. dollars and has a life expectancy of a hundred years.

During its trial operation, the bridge has shown to greatly reduce travel time from downtown Qingdao to the surrounding areas.

A natural inlet of the sea, Jiaozhou Bay has three main ports. It separates Huangdao from Qingdao City and borders on two other cities—Jiaozhou and Jiaonan.
