Aftershocks of Japan's nuclear disaster, the fear of radiation grips locals residing near a nuclear plant in northwest India. Environmentalists predict that heavy downpours could damage one key plant, making it a big threat to locals in the area.

On Saturday, locals in India's Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan state expressed concerns over the danger of the proximity of their homes to the Rawatbhata nuclear plant.

The Rawatbhata nuclear plant was built near the Maharana Pratap Dam. Locals are concerned the plant could be damaged in the event of an earthquake of flood.

Environmentalists fear that in the future, heavy downpours could damage the dams and wash out the plant completely, exposing locals to harmful radiation.

Locals say the leaks from the reactor's core can be extremely dangerous and threatens the surrounding community.

[Sunil Kumar, Local Resident]:
"If the nuclear reactor's cooling system ever fails, toxic elements from the plant could mix into the lake. This would be hazardous for those living here and in the nearby villages."

Local medical institutions say there has been a striking rise in the number of abortion and cancer cases in this region in the last few years.

Doctors attribute this condition to the increasing radiation levels from the nuclear plant, which is beginning to affect the overall population.

[Kamal Bhargava, Local Physician]:
"These days a lot of diseases are caused by radiation from power plants. The most common diseases are Bronchitis and Hypothyroid. Impotency is one of the leading problems in women due to radiation."

In the wake of the nuclear crisis in Japan, the Indian government is planning to take safety measures in its nuclear power plants in case of any emergency and to withstand natural disasters of the magnitude witnessed in Japan.
