The story of Reuben and Ora Rosenblatt is in many ways the story of the Jewish people and their sacrifices in creating the state of Israel.
Born in Poland, Reuben was three-years-old when the Nazis invaded his homeland during World War II.
Born into a reality of war and genocide, he spent his childhood in a concentration camp.
Ora was born in Yemen and immigrated to Israel with her family when she was three.
[Ora Rosenblatt, Imigrated to Israel from Yemen]:
“We heard that salvation was coming to Israel and that the Messiah was on his way, so the Jews gathered, my family, there were 40 people.”
So Ora and her family left for Israel, splitting into two groups with other Jews—Ora and her father in one, and her mother and brother in another—that way, they thought, they would have a better chance to make it.
The trip was a trail of tears.
[Ora Rosenblatt, Imigrated to Israel from Yemen]:
“I was three, a little girl. My father died on the way, got sick and died. Mother also died on the way, and we never got to say our last goodbyes.”
Ora’s family cared for her as best they could on the journey.
[Ora Rosenblatt, Imigrated to Israel from Yemen]:
“For three years we walked through the desert. I don’t remember, but I remember my aunt carried me on her shoulders, I remember how we were robbed, our belongings were stolen from us."
But they were determined to make it to Israel.
[Ora Rosenblatt, Imigrated to Israel from Yemen]:
“The Jews have been waiting, waiting for salvation, for being in our homeland—in Jerusalem. I think it’s in the heart of every Jew, not only Yemenites.”
In 1946, Ora made it to Israel at the age of six.
Like other orphan girls, Ora entered an educational facility where she met other survivors of the holocaust.
