Thousands of visitors are flocking to Tokyo Disneyland as it reopens to the public. The park was closed for more than four weeks after last month's earthquake hit Japan.

Thousands of visitors gathered at the entrance of Tokyo Disneyland amusement park from early Friday morning as it reopened to the public.

The park, one of the biggest tourist attractions near Tokyo, was closed on March 12, a day after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan, causing a tsunami and nuclear crisis, which has yet to be resolved.

More than 10,000 park visitors enjoyed reunions with their favorite Disney characters on Friday, which is also the 28th anniversary of the resort.

[Tomoko Yamakawa, Disneyland Visitor]:
"I was so desperate to come back here."

Rolling blackouts due to a region-wide power shortage were one of the reasons the park went into hibernation. There were also calls for self-restraint as a show of respect for more 28,000 people who were killed or are missing due to the double calamity.

[Mariko Miyamoto, Disneyland Visitor]:
"I had been concerned because everyone has been talking about self-restraint since the earthquake and Disneyland had been closed because of that."

The park's operator, Oriental Land, says Disneyland remained largely undamaged by the earthquake, except one roller coaster which is still out of service.

Parts of the Disneyland parking lots were covered with gravel to repair the damage caused by soil liquefaction.

[Kyoichiro Uenishi, Chief Operating Officer, Oriental Land]:
"There was some damage to the parking lot area where we found some soil liquefaction after the earthquake. But we've been able to clear that and reopen the park to our customers in time to offer them our trademark dream world and a brief moment of peace."
