Yet another tainted food story is making headlines in China. In Gansu province, authorities have detained a suspect they believe is responsible for poisoning milk from two local dairies with the chemical salt nitrite. Three children have died from drinking the milk and 36 others have been hospitalized. Here's that story.

Chinese state media reported on Monday (April 11) that nitrite-related milk poisonings appear to be intentional and that a suspect has been identified and detained.

Chinese authorities arrested the suspect in Pingliang City in northwestern Gansu province, where all of the recent milk poisonings have been reported.

The suspect's identity has not been made public.

Symptoms reported from the nitrite poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, light-headedness and facial skin discolorations.

Of the 39 people that were hospitalized for nitrate poisoning last Thursday, three have died and 14 remain in hospital in stable conditions. All three of the children who died were younger than two years old.

Chinese consumer confidence is further weakened by this latest tainted food scandal. It follows just after reports of milk contaminated with leather powder and pork containing the toxic chemical clenbuterol.
