Continuous and untimely rainfall causes severe damage to crops in India's Himachal Pradesh state. Farmers are worried the fruit crops will not grow properly... or at all.
Untimely rainfall damaged fruit crops, including plums, apricots, peaches and almonds in Shimla in India's Himachal Pradesh state.
The continuous rains have stopped flowering and pollination in the fruit plants.
Farmers are worried about the situation.
[Nandlal Gautam, Fruit Grower]:
"This year's rainfall is very harmful for plums, peach and almonds. The flowers that are coming in these trees are all falling. Flowering is not taking place properly. Bees are not coming at all for pollination. If this is the situation, the crops will fail."
Farmers say the impact is being felt more in mid-hills and lower hills.
[Pinky Lal, Farmer]:
"The problem is more on mid-hills and low hills, because in the higher hills, where there is apple cultivation, such a situation is not found."
Himachal Pradesh has over 100 square miles of land for stone fruit and walnut farming.
