Take a tour of Historic Town of Monasaraz in Monsaraz, Portugal – part of the World’s Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.

Settled atop a hill, untouched by modern life, is the town of Monsaraz in Portugal.

The fortifications of this walled town appeared after it was captured from the Moors by a prominent soldier in the 12th century.

Its layout is characterized by steep and narrow streets, ancient houses, and an air of serenity, which complete the town’s classic medieval atmosphere.

Lining the streets are pleasing undetached white-washed houses and buildings, whose singularity exudes an angelic cohesive nature.

The natives have nicknamed this white haven, “Eagles Nest,” owing to the fact that it lies on Portugal’s Spanish border.

A beautiful, yet unusual, 18th century pillory stands in the foreground of the stately medieval Our Lady of the Lake Church.
