And now to our Jakarta correspondents, who are reporting on a revival of Chinese culture in Indonesia. Expressing Chinese culture was prohibited in Indonesia for 32 years, separating a generation of Chinese descendants from their traditions. But since the year 2000 a gradual revival has been taking place. Here’s more.

About 100 participants compete in “Little Miss Cheongsam 2011”, held recently at a shopping center in Jakarta.

Participants aged between 5 and 12 years old wear various Cheongsam dresses, complete with Chinese accessories such as fans, lanterns and umbrellas.

The jury team assess the participants according to four criteria: expression, choreography, beauty, and the harmony of the accessories.

The winner of “Little Miss Cheongsam 2011” receives a trophy and a cash prize.

Cheongsam is one of the traditional Chinese dresses introduced during the Qing dynasty. However, today’s popular Cheongsam is a modernized variation developed in Shanghai in the 1920’s. At that time, Cheongsam was worn only by upper-class women.

The competition “Little Miss Cheongsam 2011” was developed by Artha Gading Mall. The aim is both to enliven the Lunar New Year celebration, and to help preserve Chinese culture in Indonesia.

[Artha Gading Mall, Competition Founder]:
"Our goal is to preserve traditional Chinese culture, currently undergoing a revival in Indonesia. We want to help the ethnic Chinese community take pride in their cultural heritage, so the cultural heritage will not become extinct, and can last forever… our children and grandchildren will also know it."

[Elisabeth Carolina Gunawan – Competition Participant]:
"A lot of young people are wearing Cheongsam here, perhaps some of them feel ashamed... but the important thing is that they make the effort to wear Cheongsam at this competition. I hope that more young people become proud of wearing Cheongsam.”
