A "microblog" is a website for broadcasting small snippets of information, a bit like Twitter. Now, a new microblog in China is helping reunite parents with lost children. The online sensation is making headlines around the country.

This emotional reunion on Tuesday (February 8) has captured the hearts of many across China. It's a result of an Internet campaign to help parents look for abducted children.

Professor Yu Jianrong started a microblog on China's popular sina.com website in late January. It asks people to submit pictures of child beggars around the country, so they can be identified by loved ones. Already, six children are reported to have been rescued because of the website.

Peng Gaofeng is one of the lucky parents. He spent the last three years searching for his son. Peng Wenle, now six, was kidnapped in 2008 from Shenzhen in southern China. After an anxious wait on Tuesday, Peng is finally reunited with his son in Jiangsu, a province more than 800 miles away from where he was taken.

The microblog is now China's latest online sensation. It has nearly 200,000 followers, and more than 2,500 pictures of child beggars have been posted. For desperate parents, this nationwide interest means renewed hope.

[Feng Jianlin, Shanxi Parent]:
"The microblog has a wide reach. Many people with missing kids can disperse information via microblogs, and a lot of people will see it. For us, it makes looking for our children easier."

Child abduction is a serious problem in China, with an estimated 20,000 abductions each year. Many children are taken to become street beggars, or are sold as laborers. Others, like Peng's son, are taken by childless families.

Many parents have criticized authorities for failing to address the widespread issue, with some even saying police hamper their efforts to look for their children.
