In recent weeks, many South American countries have officially recognized Palestine as an independent state. Our Israeli correspondents report on the situation, including one expert’s opinion that this may have some benefits for Israel.

[Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer for Palestine to the UN]:
"After nearly two decades of the peace process, we are rapidly facing the demise of the two state solution..."

The peace process between Israel and Palestine has stalled recently.

But Palestinian officials are making efforts to get more support worldwide.

In recent weeks a long list of South American countries have voiced their support for an Independent Palestinian state.

This development follows the decision announced by Argentina and Brazil that Palestine should be recognized as an Independent state within the borders that existed before the 1967 war.

[Alfredo Moreno, Chilean Foreign Minister]:
"The Chilean government has adopted a resolution today to recognize the existence of the state of Palestine as free, independent and sovereign."

Colombia is the only major South American country that has not recognized the Palestinian state.

Israel and Colombia are known to have good relations that include big weapons contracts.

Despite Israeli efforts to prevent global South American recognition of Palestine, local foreign ministers one after the other have endorsed Palestinian sovereignty.

Almost all of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and parts of Europe recognize Palestine as a sovereign state.

The U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia and most of Western Europe do not.
