Brazil has become the world's biggest exporter of beef. The government and farmers want to double production in the next 10 years.
The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development expects two-thirds of all meat exports to come from Brazil eight years from now. How is that possible? The agricultural research institute Embrapa plays a key role. In the past decades, it has developed new seeds and grasses and hybridized various strains of cattle, with great strides in efficiency in all areas. But critics fear that growth in the beef industry will lead to the destruction of rainforest.
