India - Climate Protection with Biochar | Global 3000
  • 13 years ago
Increasingly widespread use of biochar is helping transform agriculture in India. It's made for the purpose of adding it to soil as fertilizer, and since charcoal is a stable solid rich in carbon content, it can be used to lock carbon in the soil.
Biochar is charcoal created by pyrolysis - decomposition of biowaste at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. The process releases half as much CO2 as the burning and natural decomposition of biowaste. Experts estimate that biochar could therefore significantly reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
