A severe fuel shortage in India's Manipur state is now affecting mobile phone service towers. The network towers largely depend on diesel generators for thier operations.

A shortage of diesel fuel in India’s Manipur state for the past few months is now affecting mobile phone services. The All Manipur Telecom Diesel Fillers Committee decided to stop supplying diesel need to run mobile phone service network towers beginning Saturday.

The committee says it’s not able to provide the diesel because government authorities and police are raiding locations where diesel is stored.

It’s a frustrating ordeal for mobile phone users.

[Rohina, Mobile Phone User]:
“Signals get weakened now and then, due to which many times it is difficult to communicate. We are facing a lot of problems, so I would like the Manipur government to solve the problem.”

The decision of the fuel suppliers came after Manipur police arrested three suppliers and seized nearly one thousand gallons of diesel last Friday.

Police charged them for storing fuel without permission.

A total of 13 fuel suppliers had been supplying diesel to 700 mobile tower operators across the state.
