Ukraine: A Journalists Disappearance | European Journal

Life as a journalist in Ukraine is a dangerous one. In August, an editor-in-chief there vanished. His newspaper regularly reported on corruption by Ukrainian officials. The family of Vasyl Klymentyev believe he's the victim of a violent crime. Klymentyev had powerful enemies in his hometown, the industrial hub Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine. In the newspaper Novy Stil, he took aim at prominent figures, including an area prosecutor and the head of the local tax authority. More and more Ukrainian jouranlists are speaking out about the atmosphere of intimidation. President Viktor Yanukovych has also failed to establish stronger ties with European neighbors who were pushing to improve their relationships with Kiev.
