Japanese Helicopters Arrive in Pakistan to Help Flood Victim

The Pakistani city of Karachi is getting additional flood relief from Japan today. Two helicopters an an aircraft carrier have arrived in the port city... as the country picks itself up from the worst flooding in its history.

A Japan Maritime Self Defense Forces' aircraft carrier arrived in Karachi, Pakistan with two additional helicopters to work on flood relief on Monday.

The two additional helicopters will join four others that were dispatched from Japan for a disaster relief mission on August 31st in Multan City.

These contingents consist of 200 Japanese Ground Self Defense Forces personnel.

This is the second time Japan is conducting a humanitarian relief effort in Pakistan.

So far, Tokyo has offered up to $14.4 million in aid.

Massive flooding in Pakistan began in late July and swept through the country, leaving an area almost the size of England underwater.

The United Nations has said the floods affected more than 20 million people, damaged or destroyed nearly 1.9 million homes and killed 1,700 people.
