Train Accident Kills 15, Injures 50 in Central India

A passenger train crashed into a goods train in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh early on Monday, killing at least 15 people and injuring 50.
The intercity express collided with a goods train near Badarwas station, about 160 miles north of Bhopal.
The exact cause of the accident is under investigation and a probe had been ordered to determine how both trains ended up on the same track.
[Rajkumar Pathak, Deputy Magistrate, Shivpuri District]:
"This is a matter of investigation. The Railways must do the required investigation in this accident. But as the inter-city train was already standing there at the Badarwas station and could not move by the time the goods train reached the station, and the goods train crashed and damaged the passenger train from its front side."
In July, at least 60 people were killed in eastern India after one train crashed into another waiting at a station in West Bengal.
Railways play a key role in India, transporting more than 18 million passengers and more than 2 million tons of freight daily.
But the system is plagued by overcrowding and outdated technology, such as signaling systems.
