Thailand’s south is seeing another surge of violence, as five people were killed in the latest attacks. Meanwhile the army is launching an operation against the insurgency.
Separatist militants are blamed for the latest violence in Thailand’s south.
The attacks, which included drive-by shootings and a roadside bombing, took place late on Monday and early on Tuesday. Five people were killed and four injured in separate attacks that targeted both Muslims and Buddhists.
Among the victims was a Buddhist couple, both teachers, who were killed on Tuesday.
In Yala Province, a Muslim woman was shot dead and three soldiers wounded in a roadside bombing late on Monday.
Around the same time, two Muslims were killed in separate drive-by shootings in Pattani.
In Narathiwat, an assistant village leader was badly wounded in a shooting.
Suspected ethnic Malay rebels torched government offices, bus shelters, shops and phone booths on Sunday in simultaneous attacks in seven districts.
No credible group has claimed responsibility for the wave of shootings, bombings, arsons and occasional beheadings. But authorities believe separatists are responsible.
Meanwhile, the Thai army is combing through the jungles of the three southern provinces.
