Indonesian Volcano Erupts after 400 Years

After four hundred years Mount Sinabung has erupted.
The volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumatra is sending smoke about 1,500 meters or 5,000 feet into the air.
Indonesian officials have put the volcano on red alert.
[Surono, Head of Volcanology Center]:
"This is the first time in history since 1600 that Sinabung erupted and we have little knowledge about it."
Authorities evacuated at least 12,000 people from high risk areas to temporary shelters.
So far the volcano has not injured anyone or affected aviation.
Sinabung began erupting late at night after several days of rumbling.
Indoneisa is on the so-called Pacific Rim of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and geological fault lines surrounding the Pacific Basin.
