NATO Plane Carries Relief Goods to Pakistan

A plane takes off from a NATO airbase in Germany.

It carries relief goods donated by Slovakia for flood-hit Pakistan.

NATO says the relief goods include power generators, water pumps and tents.

[Sergeant James O'Connor, US Air Force]:
"We have all these wonderful resources. So we can get in and bring supplies for these people in need."

The mission followed a decision by the 28 NATO nations on Friday.

According to a statement, the aim is to provide airlift and sealift to deliver aid from nations and humanitarian relief organisations.

The mission was in response to a request by Pakistan.

[Ambassador Maurits Jochems, NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Operations]:
"Pakistan requested NATO to assist with specific list of goods on the 7th of August, two weeks ago, and immediately our Disaster Response Coordination Centre went into action and coordinated in a clearing house function the donations by individual NATO nations and NATO partner nations. And this time Slovakia made use of a NATO-provided aircraft."

Nearly a third of the country has been hit, and the task of securing more aid is urgent.

More than four million Pakistanis have been made homeless by nearly three weeks of floods.

Eight million people are still in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
