1924, un professeur, Hidesaburō Ueno (上野 英三郎)), achète un chien Hachi. Hachikō l'accompagne tous les jours à l'université jusqu'à la porte et parfois jusqu'à la gare de Shibuya.
1925, Hidesaburō Ueno meurt au travail. Hachikō continue de se rendre tous les jours à la gare de Shibuya pour attendre son retour.
