Ennis thinks Euro medals will give Olympic boost

Jessica Ennis believes the success of the Great Britain team at the European Championships in Barcelona can only have positive consequences in the lead-up to the London Olympics.

Ennis was one of five British athletes to win gold in the Catalan capital as she added the European heptathlon title to the World Championship crown she claimed in Berlin last year.

With Mo Farah winning gold in both the 5,000metres and 10,000m, Great Britain came home with 19 medals comprising six golds, seven silvers and six bronzes.

This eclipsed the previous best of 18 achieved in 1990 - although nine golds were won in Split compared to six in Barcelona.

It was also eight more medals than the team earned in Gothenburg four years ago and for Ennis it indicates the upward trajectory of British athletics.

The 24-year-old said: "I think it has shown the Great Britain team is getting stronger and stronger. To have won so many medals here is only going to give us confidence going into next year and the year after, the Olympics."
