New Yorkers React to Spy Arrests

Film is an imitation of life; recent headlines about Russian spies in the United States have captivated the nation’s imagination. This story is about espionage, backroom meetings, encoded transmissions, and of course gorgeous Russian bond girls.

This is Anna Chapman, she’s 28 years old and a successful business networker who lives a short distance from Wall Street. She’s also charged with being an undercover Russian spy. Chapman is one of 10 alleged covert agents that were arrested on Sunday as members of a Russian spy ring. They are accused of sending classified information on CIA personnel, US gold reserves and nuclear weapons to RussiaBut it’s no longer the Cold War, this April the United States and Russia signed the new START treaty, which further reduces the two powers nuclear stockpile.The two nations are welcoming a new age of cooperation and understanding. The paranoia of the Cold War seems to be absent as we ask New Yorkers if they would be more suspicious of their neighbors after hearing this news.

"You know what we already live in is a harsh bleak world for me… to just turn a suspicious eye to everybody would just drive me crazy. So the best thing is to try to live our lives as best as we can… and like I said I hope this is not the case and I hope these guys… is just some misinformation or if they are spies… I know it’s not going to be a positive outcome."

Despite the relaxed atmosphere Americans still see the need for the country to keep up its guard.
