Security forces battled militants holed up inside a house in Indian Kashmir on Thursday.

Acting on specific information, the security forces surrounded the house in Shangarpora village where the militants were hiding.

[Mukhtar Ahmad, Local Resident]:
"An encounter is going on between security forces and the militants at some distance. It had started … and is still continuing. The security forces have cordoned off the village. The militants are firing on the security forces at intervals and the forces are also firing back. It is still not known whether there are any civilians there or not."

This encounter comes after a gun battle in which security personnel killed two members of the Pakistan-based militant group, Jaish-E-Mohammad, in the Baramulla region of the state.

Separatist insurgents backed by Pakistan have been fighting security forces in the region for the past 20 years.
