Kashmir Shutdown Enters Fifth Day

Locals in Indian Kashmir face difficulties as a shutdown in the region entered its fifth consecutive day on Friday.

The shutdown was called following the death of a Muslim youth on Sunday during clashes with security forces.

Authorities have made security arrangements at key places to stop violent protests.

An undeclared curfew has been imposed in downtown Srinagar, and people are not allowed to come out of their homes.

The curfew has been imposed to thwart anti-India protests that have grown in the past week.

[Waseem Malik, Local]:
“We had to go to the hospital, we did not know that the curfew is still there. The shops are now closed for the last four days. We are facing a lot of difficulties.”

All shops, business establishments and government offices remained closed.

Cars stayed off the roads as security personnel patrolled deserted streets.

[Mir Majid, Local]:
“There is a lot of problem because of this. The curfew is not declared; we do not know how long it is going to remain in effect. I came here and realized that the shops are closed.”

Many separatist leaders have been kept under house arrest while more than 70 arrests have been made since Thursday.
