At first glance,nature on the Yamal peninsula in northwest Siberia appears to be completely unspoiled. Its vast expanses of ice only thaw slightly during the warmer summer months - but climate change is beginning to make itself felt in this sparsely populated region.The permafrost is starting to thaw even in winter. Yamal's indigenous population fears for its livelihood. Important infrastructure,including thousands of kilometers of oil and gas pipelines,is also under threat of damage.
