An attack today at a police station in Indian Kashmir has left two people dead. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Separatist guerrillas attacked a police station in Indian Kashmir on Friday. One policeman and a civilian were killed. Six others were wounded by gunfire and grenades. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack. It happened in the town of Sopore, north of Srinagar, Kashmir’s summer capital.

Muslim militants fighting Indian rule have stepped up attacks across Kashmir in recent months.

Kashmir is mainly Muslim and has been at the core of decades of hostility between India and Pakistan.

The region has been divided ever since 1947, with both countries claiming it as their own.

Indian intelligence reports claim violence may be on the rise in Kashmir because hundreds of Pakistan-based militants could have sneaked into India over the past few months.

Officials say more than 47-thousand people have been killed in 20 years of anti-India insurgency.
