Headteacher Kathryn Rhodes at Sheffield's Tapton School says 2024-25 has been "one of our best years ever" on A Level Results Day.
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Evie. I got an A-star in Geography and an A in Math and Psychology and I'm going to be in Liverpool to do Geography and I really want to do Geography in the future. I don't know what yet.
00:12At Tapton, the vast majority of students are still taking the university route. A number of them will take a nap year to go and do other exciting things.
00:21We've actually got someone joining the Peace Corps this year, which is really exciting. But generally, we will have students that go on to university.
00:30We have done a lot more work with students around the other options. There's so many different things available in terms of apprenticeships now, so we make sure that they're fully equipped to make the right decision for them, because university isn't for everyone.
00:41Hi, my name's Danny. I got two A-stars in an A at A-level. I did it in Politics, Sociology and Geography. I'm taking a gap year next year and I'm working all year and then I'm going to go to University of Manchester after I luckily got my place today and study Politics and International Relations.
01:03I'm looking forward to that, because that's kind of generally what I've done throughout my years, linking geography, bit of sociology and obviously mainly politics. And very excited, very glad. Not even what I expected, but yeah, that's about it really.
01:17I'm Felix. I got two B's in an A in fashion, art, film. I'm doing a gap year next year, hopefully travelling around Thailand and then going to study fashion in Manchester. Feeling great.
01:28Is there any struggles your school's been facing and anything that can be done to help bring more courses or to bring more student options for the students studying here?
01:39It's funding. We still have great challenges with funding and when it comes to A-level, we have to think really carefully about the subjects that we offer.
01:47A number of Sheffield schools have had to cut their offer at A-level. We've still managed to maintain a really broad offer, but that comes with a cost.
01:55So it's funding. That's the big challenge at the moment.
01:58How has the atmosphere been today with the students collecting their A-level results?
02:03It's been a fantastic atmosphere. It's been great to see all the students coming back and finding out all the fantastic destinations that they're heading off to.
02:11How have the students scored across the board? Have they mostly been good results for you guys here today?
02:16Yeah, it's been a fantastic year for us. It's been one of our best ever years.
02:19So at Tapton, we've got 66% of students have achieved A-star to B and we've made great levels of progress.
02:28So I think it puts us in about the top 5% in the country.
02:31Amazing. So is there any struggles you're finding with students at A-levels?
02:36I think A-levels are tough and that's always been the case. So it's about making sure that students have the resilience and the right work ethic and the study skills to succeed at A-level.
02:50Brilliant.
