During a Zoom call with Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Tuesday, Bowser called for residents to "know your rights" amid President Trump's takeover of the city's police department.
00:00I'll read. It's from Naomi. Mayor Bowser, can you speak to the rights, protections, and resources available to D.C. residents of all ages and how your office intends to communicate about those rights and resources to constituents in light of the recent changes of organizational structure?
00:16Well, there have been, Naomi, no changes to organizational structure. How you communicate with D.C. government remains the same, including with the Metropolitan Police Department or with your contacts in the EOM. That all remains the same.
00:35I have asked my team to look at some of the questions that we're getting from community and put together a know your rights kind of one pager. And I will continue. We're going to continue to work on that to make it as fulsome as possible and post it online.
00:54Needless to say, and this is true today as it was yesterday, as it was last week and the week before that, we expect all of our residents to act lawfully and we expect the police to act lawfully.
01:07And that is how we will proceed in this space. So part, we're having various conversations with people who have influence in the community to help spread that word. And this is the first such meeting.
01:30We intend to have this conversation. We intend to have it with our violence interrupters as well as our school leaders. And we don't and don't expect to be the only leaders of these conversations. This is really a time for community to jump in. Don't wait for me to ask. Don't wait for me to tell you to do something. But this is a time for us all to jump in and make sure that our kids know the law, know their rights and are safe.
