00:00A well-known pattern, so with imbalanced positions, with broken balance.
00:06Positions where each mistake, even inaccuracy, would be lethal.
00:13I spent a lot of time at the chessboard facing many opponents.
00:23But it was not just playing in tournaments or in short matches.
00:29I played Anatoly Karpov, dozens and dozens of games.
00:35Actually, 144 games only in the World Championship matches.
00:40Not counting a few dozens of games we played outside of the World Championship.
00:45And I know that if you spend this time with someone who is just sitting opposite you,
00:52you can feel something.
00:55You can make certain predictions.
00:59I'm sure it works the other way around, so it's not a one-way street.
01:05But I have to say that I could immediately feel when my move had an effect on my opponent.
01:11I remember, for instance, game 24 of my match against Karpov in 1985.
01:18Decisive game.
01:19Karpov had to win.
01:21They built a very strong attacking position.
01:24But he was not comfortable with an immediate breakthrough, which was the best chance.
01:29Not winning, but it was the best chance because it could put me under tremendous pressure
01:33and I had to find only moves to survive.
01:35But Karpov being Karpov didn't want to break through immediately.
01:39He wanted to prepare it.
01:41He made a quiet move.
01:43Because he didn't see what I can do to prevent it.
01:45And I found a very unusual maneuver.
01:48Highly unusual by just doubling my rooks behind my own pawns.
01:52It just looked ridiculous.
01:53But it stopped Karpov from making this advance.
01:55And I remember when I made this move, Luke 7, and Karpov looked at the board.
