Popular destinations generally look universally idyllic on social media. But what does reality look like? Lisbon, for example? We checked it out for you.
Transcript
00:00This is what Lisbon looks like on social media.
00:04Colourful, nostalgic, romantic.
00:08But what is it really like?
00:10Do the photos match reality?
00:12We did the check.
00:15Lisbon was founded by the Phoenicians.
00:17Later came the Greeks, the Romans and the Moors.
00:20They all left their mark.
00:22Its location on the Atlantic Ocean and at the mouth of the Tagus River has made Lisbon
00:27an important centre of trade.
00:29Today the capital of Portugal is a prime European travel destination.
00:38Our first check, the Elevador da Bica.
00:40The yellow funicular is a favourite on social media.
00:45Its been in operation since 1892 and it still looks exactly as it did back then.
00:50The train was declared a national monument of Portugal about 20 years ago.
00:55For around 4 euros you can ride up and back down once.
00:59The runway takes just under five minutes.
01:01The last stop at the top of the hill is the selfie spot for tourists.
01:05Photographer Virginia Borges often does photo shoots here.
01:09What is special about the Elevador da Bica is the combination between the funicular, the river in the background, the colourful buildings.
01:24That's why I think people like to come here to take pictures because it's a characteristic picture of Lisbon.
01:30The Elevador da Bica really does make for a beautiful backdrop.
01:35Although the location here doesn't have much more to offer.
01:42But Virginia Borges does have a tip for you.
01:47And if you want a more local option, the Trans28 would be an equivalent option for locals because you can see more of the city.
02:01The Trans28 travels around the most important or famous tourist attractions of Lisbon.
02:09For example, to the Rua Augusta Arch, or Arco da Rua Augusta.
02:21The arch is a popular subject on social media platforms and the subject of our next check.
02:27The arch was built after the great earthquake of 1755 and symbolizes the reconstruction of the city.
02:33This symbol of Lisbon connects the Praça do Comercio, one of the largest squares in Portugal, with the Rua Augusta promenade.
02:40The photographs in this place are more special because this is a more open space compared to other tourist attractions in Lisbon.
02:48And also the contrast between the yellow building and the blue sky gives you a nice combination of colours.
02:56The historic yellow buildings around the Arco are home to administrative offices, cafés, restaurants and stores.
03:06Our tip? Visit the viewing platform on the Arco.
03:10After going up the narrow steps and paying a reasonable €4.50 entrance fee, the view will not disappoint you.
03:20Of my whole visit, the best photo I took was there.
03:25It was with my brother and we immediately loved it.
03:28Also the locals are really cool.
03:30There was a woman who immediately said, I can help and take a picture of you.
03:34So it was amazing and it turned out to be the best photo.
03:37However, we were less impressed by the Rua Augusta.
03:41It's the kind of shopping street you'll find in every major European city.
03:50Our third stop is the Miradoro das Portas do Sol, the gateway to the sun.
03:56The lookout point is a popular meeting place for both locals and tourists.
04:00This is one of the famous spots for photos in Lisbon because here you have everything.
04:09You have the historical monuments, the river, the roofs of the houses, this beautiful light.
04:15So I think that's why people love to come here to take pictures because from here you can see all the perspectives, all layers of Lisbon.
04:24Our takeaway, the nostalgic train, the majestic arch and the viewpoint overlooking the city offer scenes and colours that will brighten up your social media feed.
04:37And it's all just as stunning in real life as in the photos.
