00:00Many households nowadays use home security cameras for surveillance and protection.
00:05Popular companies like Ring and Nest will broadcast these live feeds on the internet
00:08for users with the account's email and password to access.
00:12However, this means that if anyone else has the email and password, they can also access
00:17this live feed from anywhere.
00:19There have been many cases of hackers getting users' emails and passwords through various
00:23methods and spying on unsuspecting families, even using the camera's microphone feature
00:28to talk to them.
00:31Here are six of the most disturbing cases.
00:36Ashley LeMay is a mother of three and had installed a Ring security camera in her daughter's bedroom
00:41for peace of mind that she put in.
00:44In December of 2019, one of the daughters, Alyssa, heard a voice coming from the room and walked
00:49in expecting to find one of her sisters.
00:52However, she quickly realized no one was there.
00:56The voice began repeatedly directing non-monetizable words at Alyssa.
01:00Alyssa.
01:01What?
01:02I hear you.
01:03I can't hear you.
01:04I can't hear you.
01:05Go.
01:06Say it with me.
01:07Alyssa walks back out of her room and yells out that she can't hear you.
01:28Still thinking it's one of her family members.
01:29But she would get no response and return back to her room, confused.
01:35Come on, girl.
01:36Say it with me.
01:37Who is that?
01:38I'm your best friend.
01:39You can do whatever you want right now.
01:40You can mess up your room.
01:42You can break your TV.
01:44You can do whatever you want.
01:45Who is that?

01:53You can do whatever you want.
01:54Who is that?
01:55I'm your best friend.
01:56I'm Santa Claus.
01:57Mommy!
01:58I'm Santa Claus.
01:59Don't you want to be my best friend?
02:00The voice attempts to persuade Alyssa into misbehaving.
02:04Now scared and still unsure of where the voice is coming from, she calls out for her parents.
02:11Her parents later unplugged the camera, and have since gotten rid of the system completely.
02:16The hacking was ultimately attributed to the family reusing the same email and password from a site that was hit with a data breach.

02:40This is the home security camera footage from the Browns family, a family in Florida.
02:49On December 8, 2019, the speakers of their cameras started blasting the sound of an alarm.
02:56A voice then followed, berating them with hateful comments.
03:00Main man Shaq, it's your boy Chance on Knolls, welcome to the Knollscast.
03:14Wait, wait, so did your child come out black or like, kinda like light-skinned? I don't know.
03:22What?
03:23Nothing.
03:24The voice mentions the couple's son, which at no point during that night walked in front of the camera.
03:33This would suggest that the hacker was watching the family's live feed for longer than just that night.
03:39The Browns believe it was at least multiple days, days in which they would have no way of knowing they were being watched.
03:45However, they were unable to find out exactly how long they were being watched before the hacker came over the speaker.
03:53After nearly three minutes of enduring hateful speech from the voice, they finally ripped out the camera's batteries.
03:59Can you bring, like, a web browser up on your phone and then type in the website that I tell you?
04:05No.
04:06Why?
04:07I'll leave you and your family alone.
04:10Or I could do this.
04:13I like your dog.
04:24Hey, go to no-
04:26After this night the Browns family stopped using any kind of home security camera.
04:33In November of 2020, police in Decatur, Georgia received an anonymous phone call reporting a shooting inside of a woman's home.
04:43They immediately responded and sent out ten officers to the scene.
04:47The homeowners were completely caught off guard and suggested to the police that they were given the wrong address.
04:53Police called back to dispatch to verify the address, and they confirmed they were at the right place.
04:59The homeowners offered to let the officers search their house to avoid any suspicion of them being involved.
05:05When they found nothing inside, they started to question who the anonymous caller was.
05:10And as they were heading back outside, they would find out.
05:14Yo, I'm right in the camera. Look in the camera. Yes.
05:18The ring doorbell camera had been hacked and the family had been swatted.
05:22The fact that somebody would be childish enough to do something that could have taken somebody else's life.
05:28Change all your . Stop using the same passwords for everything.
05:33That's sick.
05:35We are sick. Yeah, we are disgusting.
05:38This is a 15-1 today. We do this all over the United States.
05:43The homeowners doorbell camera had been hacked and they'd been swatted.
05:47Being swatted is essentially when someone calls emergency services, deceiving them into believing there's an emergency at your address.
05:54The hacker was able to get the homeowners address using their IP address.
05:58They then reported a shooting as, I guess, their sick way of teaching the homeowners to use different passwords.
06:04Swatting is a real criminal offense and in some rare cases can be fatal.
06:11The hacker behind this home security camera hacking and resident swatting was never able to be identified.
06:17Tanya Amador was asleep in her house upstairs when she woke up to the sound of her ring camera's alarm going off.
06:27She worried an intruder had entered the home and so she began searching it.
06:32As she was doing so, she would hear a voice coming out of the room with the ring camera.
06:37The alarm started up again and so she finally went out to the room and took out the batteries, now thinking it was just malfunctioning.
06:44She decided to review the footage to confirm this and this is what she saw.
06:49Someone had hacked into the camera's live feed.
07:08The voice jokes around claiming to be ring support.
07:12It then demands 50 bitcoin as a ransom.
07:16Finally, the hacker would access Tanya's doorbell camera, again going on the speaker and this time saying,
07:21I'm outside your front door.
07:24It's unclear how long Tanya was being watched through her cameras.
07:28She called police, but there wasn't much they could do.
07:35This is the home security camera footage of the Chrysalik family.
07:39The camera is shown sitting on the kitchen counter as the youngest daughter sits on the couch in the background watching TV.
07:45Suddenly, a voice begins talking over the speaker.
07:50Whatcha watching?
07:52Hey, what show is that?
07:57I've seen that show before.
08:00What season ya?
08:02Hello?
08:04The girl either doesn't hear the voice or chooses not to respond to it.
08:13That's when the dad, Adam, walks in the room, unaware he's being watched.
08:18The voice continues and his head jolts towards the TV.
08:22When he realizes it wasn't coming from the TV, he pulls out his phone.
08:26That's when he remembers the ring camera.
08:29Hello?
08:30What are you eating?
08:31You're hungry?
08:32What?
08:33Hello?
08:34I'm powering off.
08:36Hello?
08:37Hello?
08:38Hello?
08:39Hello?
08:40Hello?
08:41Hello?
08:42Hello?
08:43Hello?
08:44Hello?
08:45What are you eating?
08:46What are you eating?
08:47You're hungry?
08:48What?
08:49Hello?
08:50Powering off.
08:51That was, kind of.
08:52That was me.
08:53Unfortunately.
08:54Oh, whos it is worth it.
09:02No.
09:03Hello?
09:04Kits, cough, cough, cough.
09:06How does it mean?
09:07No.
09:08Rep tip, cough, cough, cough, cough.
09:09I don't think it feels naughty.
09:10What am I asking?
09:11Ooh, nothing.
09:12What am I asking?
09:13Sorry, Inspector, cough, cough, cough, cough, cough, cough, cough, cough, cough.
09:16What are you asking?
09:17What are you including?
09:20attempts to imitate some sort of robotic Ring text-to-speech voice. However, Adam knows his
09:26account's been hacked. He disabled the camera and contacted Ring about the incident. The company
09:33responded saying an unidentified phone had logged into the Ring account. They tried to trace it
09:38back to a source, but were unable to. They basically told him there was nothing they could
09:44do but have him change his password and set up two-factor authentication for his account.
09:50A couple in Georgia had installed a home security camera in their bedroom so they could keep
09:57an eye on their dog while they were away at work. One night, right after the woman had
10:01put the dog in his crate for the night, she heard a cough over the camera's speaker. Laying
10:06in bed, she looks over at it and sees the blue light turn on which indicates someone was watching
10:11the live feed. She texts her boyfriend who was at work and asks him why he had the feed
10:16open. Seconds later, she gets a text back asking what she was talking about. Just then, a voice
10:24comes over the speaker.
10:26Shortly after, she took the batteries out of the camera. The couple says they later found
10:45out that someone had hacked into the Ring account at least four times. They filed a police report,
10:51record, but nothing ever came of it.
10:58like, she's a user.
11:00Like, can she tell us all of us.
11:02I have a plan for this.
11:04I don't know.
11:05I know.
11:07I can't see you a couple of people.
11:09Not yet.
11:15What, do you think?
11:17I suppose there's a case for you.
