Bernie Sanders: Redistricting In Blue States Is 'Pathetic' But Democrats 'Have To Respond'

Speaking to CNN's Dana Bash, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was asked about how Democrats should respond to redistricting in Texas in favor of Republicans.

00:00Redistricting. Yes. What's going on in Texas? Republicans are pushing to redraw the state's

00:06map to try to bolster the House GOP majority, eliminating Democratic seats. I know you have

00:12been a very, a longtime opponent of gerrymandering with redistricting. But you also say the Democratic

00:20governors should, quote, fight fire with fire and redraw. There are a couple of things here.

00:25Yeah. What is quite incredible. I mean, see, we are taking Trumpism kind of as normal. Trump is

00:32the one who came up with the idea. He says, hmm, let's see, Texas, I think we can get five more

00:37seats. Do it. Oh, yes. Yes, sir. You're the great leader. We will do it. And they're often trying

00:42to do it. So everybody knows what's going on. It is undemocratic. It is outrageous. And yet you think

00:48Democratic governors should try to push back and do the same thing. I think they have no choice.

00:54Yes. I mean, what Trump is trying to do, he understands that there is a good chance that

00:59Republicans will lose control over the House. I would hope the Senate as well. That'll be a

01:04tougher fight. So he's trying to make, you know, in his authoritarian way, say, hey, I don't want to

01:08lose elections. Let's rig the system. Give me five more votes in Texas. I mean, maybe some other

01:14states. So what should Democrats do? Sit back and say, oh, gee, Trump is doing this terrible. We can't do

01:19anything. Let them win the election when they shouldn't. So Democrats have got to fight back.

01:24I think it's pathetic. But I think that's what they've got to do. Even though you have said that

01:29gerrymandering undermines the political process? It does. Of course it does. Yeah. What we have now

01:35is a terrible situation. And Republicans are making it worse. But what do you do? If Republicans

01:40are doing it, you have to respond. It's pathetic. But I think you have to respond.

01:44So you have to respond. You have to respond. You have to respond. It's różnych

02:01questions. And then you have to respond. And then you can move to the wrong position.
