Nearly 12K children under five in Gaza have acute malnutrition, says WHO

Around 12,000 children aged under five in Gaza are suffering from acute malnutrition, and hunger-related deaths are rising, the Director General of the World Health Organization said on Aug. 7, 2025. At least 99 people have died, including 64 adults and 35 children, of whom 29 were younger than five from the start of this year to July 29. Between June and July, the number of admissions for malnutrition almost doubled - from 6,344 to 11,877 - according to the latest Unicef figures available.

00:00Malnutrition is widespread and hunger-related deaths are rising.
00:05In July, nearly 12,000 children under five years were identified as suffering from acute
00:12malnutrition, the highest monthly figure ever recorded.
00:19So far this year, 99 people have died from malnutrition, including 29 children under five.
00:26These reported numbers are likely underestimates.
00:31The ongoing blockages must be stopped, and greater volumes of aid need to come in to rebuild
00:38critical reserves.
00:41We call for a scaled-up, sustained and unimpedded flow of humanitarian aid, including food and
00:47health aid, in line with international humanitarian law via all possible routes.
00:54We also call for humanitarian corridors to evacuate those in need of urgent medical care outside
01:01Gaza.
01:02Since the 25th of June, WHO has sent 68 tracts of medical supplies into Gaza, including
01:09essential medicines, blood, trauma and surgery supplies.
01:15But that amount is only a fraction of what is needed.
01:19Those hospitals that are still functioning, even partially, are overwhelmed, and the most
01:25basic supplies have run out.
