00:00and joining us on the river islands guest line a voice that we have not talked to in
00:03quite some time and thrilled to have him from the athletic grant brisby on the giants how's
00:09the summer grant how you doing i'm doing very very well summer's been going great how are you
00:14guys doing we are fantastic and we are buoyed by this giants run four out of their last six
00:20they're back grant they're back oh they're back i think i write uh 2024 tigers in every article now
00:27it's it's like i just that's what i start with i just write the words 2024 tigers and then i come
00:33up with whatever i'm gonna write that day i just i believe in a man how could you not well look for
00:39real though with all the games coming up against the padres would you be starting kaiwe tang in in
00:44games right now not as such i mean i'm i'm higher on tang than you know i did hear what you were
00:52saying and you make a compelling point in that he doesn't get um outs or run you know he doesn't
01:00prevent but i i'm higher on him i really think he's got freaky stuff and he's got this career where
01:05he might not appear in another major league game but he might be uh some games closer when he's 32 or
01:11something he just has such a weird sink or such a weird combo anyway i don't think i would start him
01:16against the padres i think i would uh maybe a johnny holstaff i don't mind the the tidwell idea i mean
01:22his first name is blaze that's that's pretty good yeah it's pretty awesome and we're looking
01:26forward to seeing any number of these guys that they acquired at some point but just grant when you
01:33look at the deadline does it feel like a full waving of the white flag or more of a reshuffling of deck
01:39chairs i think it's the latter i think it is it was a calculated decision seeing where they were
01:46seeing what their odds were did they like that their odds were you know at the time what 15
01:51playoff odds i think they would have liked something a little bit more than that to add
01:56but they're looking that's going how much difference is yastrzemski duval rogers going to make uh we have
02:03two of them are free agents after the after the season we can try and re-sign him if we really want
02:07to i don't think that's in the cards for yastrzemski rogers might be a different story
02:11with duval duval's the only one that really surprised me it's just because he had so much team control
02:16i think they just got frustrated with them and they were thinking look if we are in the world
02:21series if somehow we make this miracle run like the diamondbacks did a couple years ago uh it's game
02:26seven like how crucial is this guy going to be to us clinching that game seven i and then when you
02:34start looking at the prospects they're dangled in front of them it's it's an easy one to to kind of
02:39flip grant when you look at the duval situation here was something that i was wondering about we know
02:46they were really frustrated almost on a behavioral level last year how much do you think that the
02:53residue from that led to this decision i don't think much i think from the start of spring the
03:01talk was look uh he's got a uh renewed commitment to what we've been telling him he wants to throw
03:07strikes and i really do believe that you know he's a hard guy to read of course you know he's
03:12tranquilo camilo it's it's hard to read the body language all the time but i you know i just think
03:19that he has troubles throwing strikes when he wants to and that's the long and the short of it i don't
03:24think it's a personality thing i don't think that it is uh something that you can really come down on
03:30him as a choice necessarily of course it's it's just that he is throwing 100 miles per hour and when
03:36he has a two run lead and you have the lead off batter in front of you the one thing you can't do is
03:41walk that lead off batter it's just it's kind of a coin flip and i don't think that's anything he's
03:45doing wrong i don't think it's any it's just the nature of throwing 100 miles per hour and doing
03:51uh what he does it's almost like i don't want to get too far in the weeds of of the analogy but
03:58like when dream and i was like why can't dream on just you know not be so hot-headed why can't he
04:03just you know take a little edge off and not get all those tees well is that the same dream on
04:07and the same thing applies to deval where if you're telling him to take back a little velocity
04:12if you're focusing on that command rather than the raw stuff is he the same deval i don't know but
04:17it's the yankees problem to find out now and the giants are turning to randy rodriguez just a couple
04:23of efforts as the closer what did you make of his good and his bad and also his overall makeup to be a
04:29closer going forward he's really good pitching i mean it's even with the hiccup i get that that's
04:37not the ideal hey i'm the new closer here's my business card whoops blown safe like that that
04:42wasn't great but at the same time he he just has this combination of fastball and slider that is
04:49really hard to pick up and we're talking about deval's command and that's what rodriguez was in the
04:55minor leagues but as he's gotten to the majors as he's gotten more experience he's throwing strikes
05:00he's putting that slider you know not all it's not perfect but he is dotting that outside corner
05:05they're not as frequently maybe as justin berlander in his prime but that's the idea you want to get
05:10that ball where it's too close to take uh bad pitch to swing at and he's so good at that the problem
05:16with him as the closer is that everyone behind him gets a little bit worse now as they're moved up the
05:21ladder grant brisby the athletic on the giants with us with it and dibs 95 7 the game this is
05:26totally off subject but i just got wooed by this number and so i wanted to throw it at you it's only
05:33been four games in the month of august but bryce eldridge's ops in those four games is 1800 okay he's
05:42eight for his last 16 with four home runs and 12 driven in in the last four games for sacramento are
05:50we going to see him this year i don't think so i just don't and i'd hate to you know i'm sure
05:57there's someone who almost drove off the road disappointed with that answer but it's look he's
06:02there's no rush he's still 20 the flaws in his game are going to be really evident when he comes
06:08up with the defenses is one of them you know he still a lot has a lot to learn at a new position for
06:13him first base the strikeouts uh you know the strikeout rate isn't it's not eye-popping in the
06:20general context of the minor leagues it's very in line with uh some prospects who have gone on to
06:25great things some prospects who never could get over the hump but it's it's it is there and when
06:30you have a player this tall it's always a concern it's always it's always going to get magnified a
06:35little bit more when you have a player with this much strikes on the cover what's his strikeout right
06:39what's he doing there i don't think they're going to want to put all that pressure on him at the
06:44same time i think i'm like oh for 10 when i make this the giants aren't going to call someone up
06:49so just put all your stock into elders i wouldn't do but i guess i'm very conservative they you know
06:55they're play let's put wade meckler on the roster let's get this guy up this guy i i don't know man
06:59i would just wait a little bit on eldridge it wouldn't be a service time thing it wouldn't be
07:03clock manipulation it would just be let's not because he's got so much hype for a franchise that's
07:09so hungry for a homegrown hitter and boy that's a and if you see his pattern through the minor leagues
07:15you put him at a level he struggles then comes back and it starts dominating it moves up struggles
07:21a little bit comes back starts dominating so it would be a little bit of a rough uh rough rocky
07:27transition if he comes up to the majors maybe that's what the giants want and then he can come
07:30in next year and just start raking i don't know yeah come up and struggle and uh i'm just looking
07:35the rivercat season ends in mid-september so he'd have a couple of two three weeks where he's not
07:40doing anything anyway and perhaps he can come up and play first what have you made of the
07:46rafi devers experience so far with him playing defense at first i think it's been fine i mean it's
07:53listen it's going to be there's going to be some weird things like it's it's funny when you're
07:58watching a player play a new position especially first base the things you see that just sort of
08:02seem off to you uh just a little uncanny when it's him covering the base him certain footwork
08:08things where you didn't think you knew the proper footwork but you can tell when it looks different
08:12he'll still have some of that but he's handled a couple hot shots i mean he was a third baseman
08:17it's not like you're putting some dilute who was in the left you know left field right field a dh
08:22he's someone who at least has experience with hot shots coming toward him uh he might not have the
08:27best range but he had the arm for third base it's much less important at first but it's still kind
08:33of a package where you're thinking i don't think that this the floor is much below average like i
08:40just can't picture him being the worst defensive first baseman out there uh but i don't think it'll
08:45be jt snow either yeah grant what if i threw all three of them at you devers trade signing of adamas
08:52extension for chapman um are are there any that at this hour you wouldn't do again if given the
08:59opportunity oh that's a good question that's a good question chapman i do chapman i think that
09:06was uh market value for a player that's really i mean he's still leading the giants in war he's still
09:12someone who's going to push your team towards a championship that one i do adamas i probably do if
09:19only because there aren't a lot of options coming up this year in free agency and the giants are
09:25pretty uh pretty barren internally so i still think that one makes sense and uh devers yeah that's
09:32right he's gonna be he's gonna be good he's gonna be really good for a few years is the end of the
09:37contract gonna be a mess probably but it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch him that that homer he hit
09:42into the second deck was just sort of a it's the taste that we haven't had and he does that that's
09:48what he does man that's why he gets the money he does that all the time but it's like we see it
09:53and it's a wow you know unicorn wow amazing so giants uh acquire jesus rodriguez among the myriad
10:00of deals is that just kind of a happenstance or did they acquire him in your opinion to push
10:05patrick bailey a little bit not necessarily sure about pushing him but he is if he is a catcher long
10:14term and there is some debate about that uh he he would be a right-handed hitting catcher and that
10:20would be a compliment to be like i wouldn't necessarily think of any catcher the giants
10:25bring in unless it's you know some splashy name or something or if it's a veteran like i don't sean
10:30murphy who's got all this gravitas and all this experience behind him if it's just a catcher and
10:35especially if he's hitting right-handed it's a compliment to bailey and there's no position
10:39in baseball that needs compliments more than catcher i mean if you can't just have
10:43one catcher and say i'm going to play this guy 160 games you know see that doesn't work it's going to
10:48be an 80 20 arrangement and you want that 20 if it's a guy who can hit even a little bit and you're
10:53using them against right-handed hitters which you're not getting much from bailey for i mean that's it
10:58that's the ideal sort of situation it's not a strict platoon but you have someone to help bailey do
11:04what he does best and then you're scoring more runs on the side things have gotten a little bit
11:08better of late but would love your thought because we're just kind of rounding into the first full
11:14major league season for jung-ho lee what what do you think now based on the contract and everything else
11:22oh boy another tough one hey i am at a loss because every time i think i have the answer
11:30there's another data point another something else that i see that i go ah i like or don't like that
11:37you know it's it's going to be i think mystery is over with what type of player he would need to be
11:42if he succeeds if he's going to be an above average player it's going to be through contact it's going
11:48to be gap to gap you know it's not going to be the power that he showed at yanky skating it's not going
11:52to be uh in a lot of other different ways but he's going to be a hitter who is gap to gap and if he
11:59can do that get the average up he's going to fluctuate from year to year just because that's the
12:04the curse of an average dependent hitter so i don't think this is unusual for what to expect
12:09from him i think he might have a couple years like this with the giants i think he might have
12:12five years like this with the giants but he also might have a couple where you're like
12:16how does anyone get this guy out a really good compliment not necessarily in terms of speed but
12:21juan pierre if you remember him in his best years how did you get that guy out he's a mystery
12:27and then like every three years after that he's just like a guy you can totally get out so if you look
12:33at his baseball reference page that's kind of what i see for for lee just without you know skills
12:38how do the giants get elliot ramos to be a serviceable defensive outfielder
12:44i'm not sure that that's possible and it's it's amazing that he was playing center field not that
12:55long ago and not just in spot starts but they were kind of throwing him out there in center field
12:59it's just it's doesn't seem like he has the natural ability to do it he's got the speed to do
13:06it he's got you know the arm at times to do it his arm is erratic but he can show off a strong arm
13:12it's just there's something about uh his decision making his reaction time i'm not sure if he's trying
13:19to do too much maybe he'll settle down with more experience but sometimes you just get outfielders who
13:25are like clumsy french waiters i mean it's just they're walking there they just drop all the
13:31plates and that's the gag you know it's just sometimes they can't help it and ramos might
13:36be one of those guys and i listen i've thrown out a lot of names from the past but if you're an old
13:41giant head and you remember glenn allen hill i'm not saying he's glenn allen hill yeah at some point
13:46it's like look this is who he is and what are you getting elsewhere we're getting a lot of good
13:50things elsewhere i just don't see him ever being like an asset in left field you know pat burrell
13:57sort of in left field might be the uh the best comp that you can say yeah i can live with that and
14:03yeah maybe you could grant brisby the athletic on the giants this is a broad one grant but i think
14:09this is what you're really good at and and and so i'll explain what i mean by this but the question is
14:14how are the giants doing and and and and this is what i mean jung hu lee is a huge part of their
14:21marketing arm and then you just have the answer you gave the devers trade was supposedly the guy they
14:30haven't been able to get they get him and then immediately can't seem to win baseball games a new
14:36regime has come in with all kinds of positivity now suddenly it feels like there are warts as an entire
14:44sort of relationship with its fans how the giants doing another tricky man you you guys were up all
14:52night weren't you right grant we're ready for you today we've been waiting i think oh man you just
14:59have a post-it note on your computer with all the hard questions i i think they're doing okay insofar
15:05as it used to be the narrative that the giants are always going to finish in second place the
15:10giant's going to go after judge and the giant's going to go after harper and i think yeah there
15:14was some justified snark about that but it's also if you listen if you think about the names that
15:21we're talking about they're the biggest names in the sport otani everyone's otani everyone's
15:25yamamoto everyone's sasaki you know the giants are going to be facing an uphill battle and getting any
15:30of these guys and so now that they've signed chapman and re-signed him they have adamas
15:35and they traded for devers if this core can hit the way that they should hit other players will say
15:42that looks like a good fun time because those are you've got adamas and chapman they've got the
15:47reputation of the clubhouse you have it's got the sense you've got a moment a player's manager it's
15:53run by an ex-player i think that they've got a good thing kind of going it's been a little bit of a
15:58cursed year though and someone brought this up and it was an excellent question and i couldn't really
16:04answer it's who are you mad at right like you're looking at this giant team and you go this team
16:09who are you mad at it's you know are you mad at the owners now they can you know signed some
16:14they for some really big money to you except posey he went out for it and then he cut bait when a lot
16:20of guys wouldn't have and maybe if you don't like that that's not in the plus column but listen there's
16:26there's like a lot going into this team and there's not much coming out and you look around and
16:32who are you mad at you maybe verlander but come on that's not that's not the difference in this
16:36season you know it's what are you talking about it's you can add up all the things that have led to
16:41where the giants are where it's a thin bench whether it's uh fitzgerald not doing what he did
16:46last year and they they really counted on him too whether it's lamont wade jr just completely
16:51forgetting how to hit a fastball these little things i think add up to the disappointment and if
16:57there's really something to be mad at it's the player development over the last x number of years
17:02they've given the giants some good pitchers some interesting pitchers but they really haven't
17:06come up with anything other than ramos and fitzgerald for a little bit so that's where the focus of the
17:13ire should be but again i think they're doing fine i think they're mostly doing fine this year is just
17:18kind of gross well i'll answer your question because we've been asking all the questions who we mad at
17:23kaiway tang yeah punch up yeah that guy yeah get it out kaiway tang
17:31good ticket though yeah thank you i've had i've had a post-it note so yeah yeah grant grant uh great
17:39stuff and go bearcats all right you gotta go panthers let's go man all right all right there's uh there's
17:45grant brisby
