00:00:00The End
00:00:30The End
00:01:00The End
00:01:30Oh, don't worry
00:01:31Just look there
00:01:32The End
00:01:35The way I figure it, another thousand dollars and she'll be ready for Indianapolis
00:01:55And I wouldn't give you another buck and a half
00:01:57But Reno, this is the fastest iron in the business
00:02:00How many years have you been taking this pile of junk to the race, Red?
00:02:03Six?
00:02:03Seven?
00:02:04Eight?
00:02:04And you never even qualified?
00:02:06Yeah, but we...
00:02:07We broke a steering knuckle last year
00:02:09And the year before?
00:02:10Hey, Red
00:02:11You think this is enough clearance?
00:02:16Well, I'd give it a couple of thousand more
00:02:18Thanks
00:02:19Tell me what it'll do, Red
00:02:20I'll buy the garage
00:02:21Yeah, but what do you want with the garage?
00:02:23You already got the racetrack and the two best cars
00:02:25But the cars aren't mine
00:02:26They belong to my daughter
00:02:27Yeah, I know
00:02:28So the other owners can't squawk to the association that you're winning all your own
00:02:31Hey, Reno
00:02:32Did you see me get fouled up yesterday?
00:02:42Yeah, good luck, Happy
00:02:43Man, man, I was way out and fro in this little old Indian sourdough
00:02:47Hey, Red, take a look at one of those floods
00:02:51Well, it looks like your mixture is too lean
00:02:56Yeah, that's what I figured
00:02:58I'll take a deal, Reno
00:03:00Yeah?
00:03:01Another thousand now and I'll take care of your cars for a year
00:03:03Not a chance
00:03:04Okay, then you better find yourself another mechanic for number one
00:03:07Now, wait a minute
00:03:07You don't want to throw good money away
00:03:08I'll take care of Flagle's car instead
00:03:10Hey, you can't do that to me
00:03:12I got a mortgage on this place
00:03:13You know what you can do with it, don't you?
00:03:17Out of the way, Mac
00:03:28Howdy
00:03:34Yeah
00:03:34Which one of you guys is Red Stanley?
00:03:36Right there
00:03:36Uh-huh
00:03:37Uh, can you use a first-rate mechanic around here?
00:03:40Like who?
00:03:41Like me
00:03:41Oh, you're good, are you?
00:03:42Oh, I hate to brag, but I'm about the best there is
00:03:44Maybe you better hire this kid to take my place, Reno
00:03:48Maybe I better let you have that thousand dollars
00:03:50Ah, now you're talking
00:03:51Sorry about the job, kid
00:03:53I need another mechanic like I need a hole in my gas tank
00:03:56How do you like that?
00:04:00A picture of my father
00:04:01That's been taken a long time ago
00:04:03Hey
00:04:04What's your name?
00:04:07Coy, Billy Coy
00:04:08Cannonball Coy's kid
00:04:10Yeah, that's right, that's my father
00:04:11I was with him in Indianapolis
00:04:13I know, that's why I came down here to see him
00:04:15Well, maybe you know I was sitting next to him
00:04:17What happened?
00:04:18That was back in the days when they used to carry a mechanic, huh?
00:04:21Uh-huh
00:04:21They're right on the north curb
00:04:24Less than a left to go
00:04:26I know
00:04:26Oh, he sure was a great driver, though, wasn't he?
00:04:30Uh-huh
00:04:30I hope someday I can be just half as good
00:04:33I have to be good, kid
00:04:35Oh, I know that
00:04:36What happened to her?
00:04:39I mean, uh
00:04:40Where is she?
00:04:41What happened to who?
00:04:43Mary
00:04:43I mean your mother
00:04:45Oh, she's here, she's with me
00:04:46Wait, you two?
00:04:48Yeah, we got her this morning
00:04:49Oh
00:04:49Hey
00:04:51I can find you some kind of a job, kid
00:04:53Well, that's great of you, Red
00:04:55I haven't seen her for 17 years
00:04:59I'll bet she's still a fine-looking woman
00:05:08Oh, yeah, she's fine
00:05:10Uh-huh
00:05:11Well, how's she feeling?
00:05:14Good
00:05:14Say, uh, listen, Red
00:05:15When do you want me to, uh
00:05:16When can I start to work?
00:05:18Uh, oh, any time now
00:05:19Right away, get yourself some overalls
00:05:20Pay your gifts
00:05:23To get back to your mother
00:05:25Well, would you like to see her sometime?
00:05:28Yeah
00:05:29Uh, I sure would
00:05:30Uh, now that you mention it
00:05:32Well, uh, why don't you come over, uh, tonight?
00:05:36Yeah
00:05:36Why don't I?
00:05:40I don't know
00:05:41Why don't you?
00:05:51And what I said to you goes
00:05:54All right, Romeo
00:05:55I'll send you a check in the morning
00:05:57Say, uh, say, Mac, where can I find a curb?
00:06:03You're a girl, aren't you?
00:06:04Yeah, and take it easy on a curb
00:06:06Well, look, all I want to do is find out where I can get a pair of overalls
00:06:09Well, there's a locker over by the washroom
00:06:11You might find some there
00:06:12Well, I wouldn't have, uh, if I'd known you were a girl
00:06:14I wouldn't have
00:06:15You know
00:06:16Ha, ha, ha
00:06:19Ha, ha, ha
00:06:20Ha, ha, ha
00:06:21Why don't you stop knocking yourself out and help me put this wheel on
00:06:24What wheel?
00:06:25What do you think this is?
00:06:26Ten?
00:06:27Oh, oh, uh
00:06:28Sure
00:06:29Take it easy around the curb
00:06:32Hey, Billy
00:06:43Lock this door when you leave
00:06:45Yeah, I'll do that little thing, Red
00:06:46See you tonight
00:06:47Night, baby
00:06:50Night, Bill
00:07:02What are you doing in my car?
00:07:19Nothing
00:07:20Oh, get out of it and stay out
00:07:21Oh, my, it's nice
00:07:32To see you again
00:07:33Come on in
00:07:36You haven't changed a bit
00:07:39I think you have
00:07:42I think you have
00:07:44Oh
00:07:44I just thought I'd bring
00:07:48I mean
00:07:49You used
00:07:50To like peppermints
00:07:53Oh, aren't they?
00:07:56Chocolate covered
00:07:57You remembered
00:08:00Have one
00:08:01Huh?
00:08:03Oh
00:08:03Don't be so frightened, Arthur
00:08:06I'm not a young girl anymore
00:08:07I'm a worn-out, middle-aged woman
00:08:09You still look good to me, Mary
00:08:11I'll put your hat away
00:08:15Oh, yes, sure
00:08:17Sit down
00:08:17Thanks
00:08:20Have some candy
00:08:24Hiya, Mom
00:08:27I got news for you
00:08:29I'm a working man
00:08:30Oh, Vinnie, sure
00:08:31All I had to do was mention
00:08:31Cannibal's name
00:08:32And Red gave me a job just like that
00:08:33Oh, Vinnie, that's
00:08:34Well, I guess I'm just a lucky guy
00:08:36Not everybody had a father like him, huh, Mom?
00:08:37I guess not, yeah
00:08:38Oh, Mrs. Coy
00:08:39Mrs. Coy
00:08:41What is this between you and...
00:08:45And this fellow, Red?
00:08:48Oh, Vinnie!
00:08:49Oh, don't give me that surprise routine
00:08:50You've never seen the luck
00:08:51I didn't guess what he was talking about you
00:08:52Oh, what a schmo
00:08:53Haven't seen her in 17 years
00:08:55Still a good-looking woman, huh?
00:08:57I'll bet he thought you were the belle of the ball, huh?
00:08:59Oh, Vinnie, I'll...
00:08:59May I have the next waltz?
00:09:04Vinnie!
00:09:04Then along came Cannonball
00:09:05Bashful, schmo
00:09:06And the rest of these guys
00:09:06Had to jump right out of the window
00:09:07Because Cannonball was the champion
00:09:09Vinnie!
00:09:09So a champion
00:09:09But nothing
00:09:10Look, you'll be here any minute now
00:09:12I'll bet he'll have a box of chocolates
00:09:13And under one arm
00:09:13And his hat in the other
00:09:14And I'll bet he won't know which is which
00:09:15Vinnie, we have company
00:09:17Oh, hiya
00:09:18No, no, no, no, no
00:09:19Hiya, Red
00:09:24Hi
00:09:26Don't be formal
00:09:27Just call me schmo
00:09:29Well, I knew you were there all the time
00:09:33Didn't I, Mom?
00:09:34I knew he was there
00:09:35I don't think so, dear
00:09:36How do you like that?
00:09:38Can't even trust your own mother
00:09:39I think you ought to apologize
00:09:40That's all right, Mary
00:09:41I insist
00:09:42You apologize to schmo
00:09:44Excuse me, will you, Red?
00:09:47Sure
00:09:47Forgive us
00:09:48All right
00:09:48Can I have one of your candies?
00:09:49Uh, Peppermint
00:09:51Say, uh
00:09:51Who's this guy?
00:09:53What is this guy, Vic something or other?
00:09:54What's he got to do with driving those number one cars?
00:09:55Vic Sullivan?
00:09:56Yeah, Red
00:09:56Well, he drives them
00:09:57Is he any good?
00:09:58High-point man of the midgets this year
00:10:00Wait till I get a hold of one of those little jobs
00:10:02I'll drive his ears off
00:10:02Say, you don't know a guy with a hot iron
00:10:04That needs a good chauffeur, do you?
00:10:06Do you ever do any racing?
00:10:08You ever see that little job of mine?
00:10:09Yeah, I noticed you had one
00:10:11Well, I'd beat everything up in Idaho
00:10:12Do you ever drive it on a regular racetrack?
00:10:15Regular racetrack?
00:10:16Not exactly
00:10:17Huh, it's a little different
00:10:18How can it be a little different?
00:10:21If I never get the chance
00:10:22Suppose we change the subject
00:10:23I'm never gonna change the subject, Mom
00:10:26Maybe you like working in the cannery
00:10:29But I don't like to see you do it
00:10:30I don't like to see you wear the same dress for five years
00:10:32If I wanted to stay poor, I'd have stayed in Idaho
00:10:34I want to make dough real dough
00:10:35Not the kind you get from clerking in a grocery store
00:10:37Look, look, kid
00:10:38There's only a few shoppers making any money in this record
00:10:42And there's hundreds of kids already shooting for the eight or ten jobs that really pay off
00:10:47Red, I don't care if there are a thousand
00:10:48They get in front of me and I'll drive right over
00:10:50Billy, put a shirt on
00:10:52Now, wait a minute
00:10:52What?
00:10:53Don't hit me, will you please, Mom?
00:10:54Please, I'm kidding
00:10:55Ow!
00:10:56Don't speak to your mother that way
00:10:58Take it easy, will you, Red?

00:11:19Each car is given three laps in order to obtain its best time

00:11:24They made this into a real racing buggy, huh?
00:11:26Uh-huh

00:11:28If you turn over, scrumge down and pull your head in
00:11:31Don't worry about me, but thanks for the advice

00:15:15I'll run those guys right off the track.
00:15:16Sure you will.
00:15:17I'll have that iron of mine running just like an offy if I...
00:15:20Hey.
00:15:21You going to be busy Saturday night?
00:15:23Uh-huh.
00:15:24Will you meet me in front of Red's at 8 o'clock?
00:15:26Uh-huh.

00:16:15Uh, yes, Mary, but...
00:16:16And then his very first race, he had an accident.
00:16:18He could have been killed.
00:16:19But look, Mary...
00:16:20You're encouraging him, aren't you?
00:16:22If he's going to race anyway, I don't want him to be killed because some dumb mechanic
00:16:25forgets to fasten a bolt.
00:16:29What is there about racing that you can't resist?
00:16:32Why do you want to risk your lives?
00:16:33Time after time after time, you or Billy or anybody else.
00:16:36Well, I guess it's for the same reason that men hunt gold and drill for oil wells.
00:16:40It's like Billy says.
00:16:41It's a chance to hit the jackpot.
00:16:44Look at those cups up there.
00:16:45And a big one is filled with $100 bills.
00:16:48Now, if you can win the $500 in Indianapolis, you can get rich!
00:17:00Reno, why should I drive for 30% of the purse when every other chauffeur on the track is getting 40?
00:17:05And you make more money than any of them.
00:17:08Well, it figures.
00:17:09I'm the best driver.
00:17:11I give you the fastest car.
00:17:14Yep.
00:17:15Mr. Riley, your daughter's here.
00:17:16Send her in.
00:17:19Hello, baby.
00:17:20Hi, Dad.
00:17:24Dad, I need some money.
00:17:25I need a lot of money.
00:17:26Well, what's on your mind?
00:17:27Want to buy yourself a hot rod?
00:17:28No.
00:17:31Are you two through talking?
00:17:33Don't worry about him.
00:17:34Go ahead, speak up.
00:17:37Well, I...
00:17:39Dad, I want to buy a dress.
00:17:44A dress?
00:17:45You?
00:17:46You must be kidding.
00:17:47No, I'm not.
00:17:47I think it's about time I had one.
00:17:49Well, baby, if that's what you want, okay.
00:17:52How much is a dress going to cost?
00:17:54Well, gee, I...
00:17:56I don't know, sadly.
00:17:57$20, $30, maybe?
00:17:58You could shop around.
00:17:59There's a lot of sales.
00:18:00He might even get one for $15 or less.
00:18:01Listen, if my girl's going to get a dress, she's going to get a good one.
00:18:05Here's a hundred bucks.
00:18:06Oh, thanks, Dad.
00:18:07Thanks a lot.
00:18:08Oh, wait a minute, little.
00:18:11What's the matter, Dad?
00:18:14The hair.
00:18:17Thanks, Dad.
00:18:18I wish you could be that generous with me.
00:18:24You'd look nice in a dress.
00:18:26Well, I'll be busted.
00:18:35Surprise, Maddie?
00:18:36What do you do with all that paint on your face?
00:18:38Paint up like an Indian.
00:18:39And what do you do with that thing on?
00:18:41I have a date tonight.
00:18:42A date with a boy?
00:18:44Sure.
00:18:44I'd like the things I bought.
00:18:46Two dresses.
00:18:47What are you squandering all your money on dressing for me?
00:18:49You got a closet full of clothes.
00:18:51Oh, I haven't got anything at all.
00:18:53You haven't got anything?
00:18:54Why, you got more pretty things in there than both was your age.
00:18:57What's the matter with you, Minnie?
00:18:58A girl can't go around wearing things like that on her first date.
00:19:02And you just take this thing back to the burlesque show where you got it.
00:19:06Will you please unpack my shoes, lady?
00:19:11Why, these sure are pretty, Miss Lou.
00:19:15That boyfriend of yours sure must be something.
00:19:18He's wonderful.
00:19:19He'd have to be to make my baby wear things like this.
00:19:22Zip me up, please.
00:19:23Uh, is he tall?
00:19:25Mm-hmm.
00:19:26Not exactly.
00:19:27Medium?
00:19:28No.
00:19:29No.
00:19:30Well, what does he look like?
00:19:32Well, you'll like him, Minnie.
00:19:34He's kind of a, well, he's kind of a short Gary Cooper.
00:19:37He's really very handsome.
00:19:38And he has icy blue eyes and firm jaw and high-intelligent forehead.
00:19:43And he, he looks like Gary Cooper, James Mason, and Charles Boyer all rolled into one.
00:19:47Uh-huh.
00:19:47But what does he look like when you unrolled him?
00:19:50How about it, girl?
00:20:00Minnie, where's my daughter?
00:20:01There she is, Mr. Reno.
00:20:02A combination of Ingrid Crawford and Bergdorf Goodman all rolled into one.
00:20:11Well, stand up, honey.
00:20:13Let me get a good look at you.
00:20:18Oh, Daddy, I can't walk in these things.
00:20:21Of course you can walk, darling.
00:20:22Sure you can walk.
00:20:23There's nothing to it.
00:20:25I've been wearing these high-heeled cowboy boots for years.
00:20:27But I just know I'm going to fall.
00:20:28You won't fall, darling.
00:20:29Now, look at here.
00:20:30Listen to me.
00:20:30There's nothing to this.
00:20:31All you do is just put your weight forward on your toes.
00:20:34See?
00:20:34Lean forward.
00:20:35Bend your knees slightly.
00:20:36And when you feel a pain in the small of your back, then you're walking comfortably.
00:20:40See?
00:20:40Nothing to it.
00:20:40Look.
00:20:44Come on, now.
00:20:45Let me see it.
00:20:46Come on.
00:20:47That's it.
00:20:48You made it.
00:20:49That's my baby.
00:20:50Okay.
00:20:51Now, I've got something special for you.
00:20:59Look at that.
00:21:01Oh, Daddy.
00:21:02Ah, for being such a very nice father.
00:21:06Thank you, baby.
00:21:07Now, help me put it on, because you know what?
00:21:09What?
00:21:09I have a great big date tonight.
00:21:12Well.
00:21:12Well, that don't beat all.
00:21:19When she was five years old, she was playing football and driving a racing car.
00:21:24And now, she's 19 years old and just learned how to walk.
00:21:28Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:21:31Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:21:33Ha, ha, ha!
00:21:34Buddy?
00:21:59Hi, Billy.
00:22:04Oh, what was the matter?
00:22:10It's a rough sidewalk.
00:22:11You had a rough trip.
00:22:13But you're all dressed up.
00:22:16It was just a little thing I had around the house.
00:22:19Would you like to take the car?
00:22:21Well, I wasn't planning on this.
00:22:25Oh, careful.
00:22:26I mean, I wasn't planning on you being all dolled up or anything.
00:22:29Well, a girl can't go around in jeans all the time, can she?
00:22:32No.
00:22:32Oh, me, the way I'm dressed and you.
00:22:36I wasn't planning on going dinner dancing or anything.
00:22:39We don't have to.
00:22:41Why don't we take a ride?
00:22:43A ride?
00:22:44Look, Mike, to tell the truth, remember those two special carburetors that you showed me the other day?
00:22:55The ones I was working on?
00:22:56Yeah.
00:22:57Well, I thought that maybe I'd get rid of my two old carbs and put those two specials in tonight.
00:23:03And that's what I thought we'd do, right?
00:23:05Oh, sure.
00:23:07Sure.
00:23:08Well, of course, we don't have to do it tonight.
00:23:10We...
00:23:10Or you could show me where they are and I could...
00:23:13Well, sure, I'll show you where they are.
00:23:15You don't mind?
00:23:16Not at all.
00:23:17Oh, well, that's swell.
00:23:18I don't...
00:23:18Oh, I mean, if I'd have known that you were dressed the way you are,
00:23:23I'd have gotten dressed too.
00:23:24We'd have done something what you wanted to do.
00:23:26Thank you, Dr. Morgan.
00:23:40You're welcome.
00:23:41I figured she's geared just right.
00:23:44Hey, Deacon, I knew you were looking for a chauffeur.
00:23:47I was looking for one.
00:23:49Well, looks like you're running in a little bit of luck because I won the main at Carroll last week, you know.
00:23:53Hot rods?
00:23:54Well, why don't you shut your mouth?
00:23:56Why don't you stay in your own league, Nothead?
00:23:58Sorry, kid.
00:23:59I signed Happy Lee this morning.
00:24:02Happy Lee?
00:24:02Oh, well, he's a swell driver, Deacon.
00:24:05You got a good boy.
00:24:05Thanks, anyway.
00:24:06So long, Nothead.
00:24:08So long, phony.
00:24:11You want a little rich on the outside?
00:24:13Sure.
00:24:15Hiya, kid.
00:24:15Hi, Hap.
00:24:16Hello, Eddie.
00:24:17Here, you got yourself a ride.
00:24:19Gonna make little old four bits here run like a bug and a quarter.
00:24:22Anybody can do it.
00:24:23You're the guy.
00:24:24Hey, I know where you can get yourself a ride, too.
00:24:26Yeah?
00:24:26Where?
00:24:27It's a hoodoo wagon.
00:24:29A hoodoo wagon?
00:24:30What do you mean?
00:24:30It means it's a green car.
00:24:31Oh.
00:24:32Oh.
00:24:33See, a driver won't touch a green car.
00:24:34Yeah, I know.
00:24:35Guy drove one in a big race at Indianapolis.
00:24:37Had his iron out in front for 409 miles in less than a minute to go.
00:24:41You know what he did?
00:24:42Put it through a wall and got himself killed.
00:24:45Haven't ever heard about green cars before.
00:24:46Yeah, Eddie, I know all about him.
00:24:48Well, this guy was a real big shot back in those days.
00:24:50Maybe you'll remember him.
00:24:51The name was, uh, uh, what was his name, Ed?
00:24:54His name was, uh...
00:24:55Cannonball Coy.
00:24:56That's it.
00:24:57Cannonball Coy.
00:24:59If you're interested, he...
00:25:01He was my father.
00:25:02Who is it?
00:25:18It's Schmo again.
00:25:20Oh, Arthur.
00:25:23This is a nice surprise.
00:25:25Well, I thought I'd come over and listen to the radio, if you don't mind.
00:25:27Well, of course I don't mind.
00:25:29Come on, sit down.
00:25:30I'll turn it on for you.
00:25:31Thanks.
00:25:31Any particular station?
00:25:32Yeah, turn it on 980.
00:25:35980.
00:25:36980.
00:25:38Good evening, sports fans.
00:25:39Here we are at the world's fastest quarter-mile dirt track,
00:25:41Culver City, home of the Mighty Midget.
00:25:44They're broadcasting the auto races.
00:25:46Oh, Arthur, I don't want to hear them.
00:25:49Well, you don't want to hear this one, Mary.
00:25:51The boy's driving.
00:25:56Oh.
00:25:56Hey, George phoned me from the track, Keith.
00:25:59Thought I'd like to listen to it.
00:26:00Here they come in the last qualifying heat.
00:26:03It's six laps for the sixth fastest car.
00:26:06On the floor, it's the track record holder,
00:26:08Lou Riley's number one junior,
00:26:09with Vic Sullivan at the wheel.
00:26:11And on the outside, it's Billy Coy,
00:26:12and that screen's number 73 is the hood away.
00:26:16This is Billy Coy's first time out in the midget.
00:26:18Tonight, he's defying the best-known racing superstition.
00:26:21Get away from me with that hoodoo wagon.
00:26:22Hey, I'll run you to the fence.
00:26:25You get my way, and I'll drive right over you.
00:26:30Here they come now.
00:26:31Wheel the wheel down to the starting line.
00:26:33The starting line has got the great flag
00:26:34ready to get them to the green line.
00:26:35And they're off.
00:26:36Let's go.
00:26:37They're really pouring it off.
00:26:50They're holding the pull as he takes the turn.
00:26:56They're holding the pull as he takes the turn.
00:27:26Ladies and gentlemen, stay back.
00:27:42Please, remain seated.
00:27:43Just as soon as we know the condition of the boy,
00:27:45we'll let you know.
00:27:46Oh, now, Billy, don't let it be Billy.
00:27:52The track ambulance is racing across the field,
00:27:54and it's car number 73.
00:27:57The hoodoo wagon has crashed out there.
00:27:59It's Billy Coy in the hoodoo wagon.
00:28:00Oh, God, not again.
00:28:02Take it easy.
00:28:04The yellow flag is up.
00:28:04That's the caution signal.
00:28:06The drivers are slowing down.
00:28:07We're still waiting here tensely.
00:28:08Everybody is tense.
00:28:09Oh, God, not Billy, too.
00:28:12The pit crews are swarming across the track.
00:28:14They're running toward the wrecked car.
00:28:16Well, now, there's the driver.
00:28:18He's out of the car and on his feet.
00:28:20He signaled the crowd he's okay.
00:28:21Oh, Arthur, he's safe.
00:28:28He's safe.
00:28:28Sure, he's safe.
00:28:30He's going to have a charming life, that kid.
00:28:32Take it from me.
00:28:37You just leave it to me.
00:28:41Hiya, Billy.
00:28:42That was a dirty trick.
00:28:44Yeah, yeah.
00:28:46You see me run that hoodoo car through the fence?
00:28:48I sure did.
00:28:49Get him, Billy.
00:28:54Slug him.
00:28:55Get in that cab now.
00:28:56Keep that right hand up.
00:28:57Now, the left.
00:28:58The left.
00:28:59Keep the left up.
00:29:04That's it, guy.
00:29:04You got him.
00:29:06Wow.
00:29:07All right, cut it out.
00:29:08Cut it out.
00:29:09Break it up here, you two.
00:29:10Break it up.
00:29:10Somebody grab him there.
00:29:11What is it with you two guys?
00:29:13You try to run me through the rail again, I'll kill you.
00:29:15What's the matter?
00:29:16Can't you take it, not head?
00:29:17Stop it, you two.
00:29:18I'll have you both barred.
00:29:20Crisp, isn't it?
00:29:23Anybody need a doctor?
00:29:24Yeah, I do.
00:29:26Smart young man here.
00:29:27Decide to put his hand on a red-hot exhaust pipe.
00:29:30Boy, am I burned up.
00:29:33Wow.
00:29:33How about it, Doc?
00:29:36Hand like this, you'll be able to drive in about a week.
00:29:38All right, I'll quit for the night.
00:29:39Right after the main event.
00:29:41You'll quit right now.
00:29:43Oh, listen, Doc.
00:29:44The car's already qualified.
00:29:45Drive is disqualified.
00:29:46By me.
00:29:47And that's official.
00:29:49Well, who am I going to get to drive my car?
00:29:51Not my worry.
00:29:52Well, how about me, Deacon?
00:29:54You?
00:29:55Sure.
00:29:56Not on your neck.
00:29:57I got 6,000 bucks tied up in old four bits, and I'm not going to let any green kid take
00:30:00her out and put her through a fence.
00:30:02Oh, he's all right, Deacon.
00:30:03He beat me twice in a hot rod.
00:30:04Three times.
00:30:05Yeah?
00:30:06Yeah.
00:30:07Oh, give me a chance, will you, Deacon?
00:30:08Let me show you what I can do.
00:30:11All right.
00:30:12And here comes Billy Coy into the winner's circle.
00:30:26So let's give him a great big hand.
00:30:29And here's the Lord Graves to present his trophy to the winner.
00:30:32Well, I guess I give this to you.
00:30:34Well, where's the kiss that goes with it?
00:30:35Oh, is that part of the deal?
00:30:37Sure, I guess.
00:30:37I've got you a picture in the paper.
00:30:38Yeah.
00:30:42Wow.
00:30:45Where do I come if I want an encore?
00:30:47Well, I'm at the Club Argentina dropover any time.
00:30:49Well, I'll do that again.
00:30:50I want to get a close-up.
00:30:51Huh.
00:30:51I paid him to say it.
00:30:52Okay.
00:31:00Oh, I hope you got your money for it.
00:31:01I sure did.
00:31:12Billy!
00:31:15Billy!
00:31:15Billy!
00:31:20Hi, Billy.
00:31:25Howdy, Red.
00:31:26Well, where have you been all day?
00:31:28I guess I should have phoned you.
00:31:29I quit this morning.
00:31:30Oh, you're going to quit working for a living, huh?
00:31:31That guy's a sucker to work eight hours a day for mechanics wages.
00:31:34Say, you've got something there.
00:31:35I make more of winning one race than I do around here all month.
00:31:37Yeah, but you might not win another in a year.
00:31:39You haven't even got a car to drive.
00:31:40That's what you think.
00:31:41You know that new iron that Deacon Jones is building?
00:31:43Six bits?
00:31:43Yeah, well, I hope you're going to drive that,
00:31:44and I'm going to take over number 50.
00:31:46Hey, look, do me a favor, will you?
00:31:47Drive the car a few weeks to make sure before you quit your job.
00:31:51Well, I suppose you do me a favor and let me make my own mistakes.
00:31:53Sure, go ahead and make them.
00:31:55You've got my permission.
00:31:55I want to smoke them?
00:31:56No, thanks.
00:32:05Hi, Billy.
00:32:06Hey, hi, Bud.
00:32:07You're going to ride four bits?
00:32:09Yeah, that's right.
00:32:09Well, would you like to put this on your helmet?
00:32:11What is it?
00:32:12Oh, half a dollar.
00:32:13Four bits I get in.
00:32:14That's cute.
00:32:15Yeah, I bet you might like to have a lunch charm,
00:32:16but we'll just start to keep you out of danger.
00:32:18Thanks.
00:32:19What's got in the box?
00:32:20New hat.
00:32:20Want to see it?
00:32:21Yeah.
00:32:23Got it.
00:32:23There.
00:32:25I just bought it.
00:32:28How do you like it?
00:32:30That's a hat?
00:32:33Look, I've got to get going.

00:36:13Go out to the speedway tomorrow and watch those midget cars
00:36:17And here's the daredevil that you read about on the sports pages
00:36:20The fella that drives them, Billy Coy
00:36:23Hiya speedy, what are you going to do in the race tomorrow?
00:36:29Well, I'm going to do my best and if I have to, I'll drive right over
00:36:34Oh, that's wonderful, that's a tip for all you race fans
00:36:37Say, Carlos, have you got that can of buckshot ready?
00:36:40Say, senorita
00:36:41Well, let's shake it
00:36:42Well, we're doing Barney Oldfield
00:36:50As we find here, we drink Barney, the best
00:36:53McGregor's Heather Jew
00:36:54You don't even have to drink it
00:36:56You just take that corkert and inhale it
00:36:59Well, let me buy you folks a drink
00:37:02Waiter, what do you have?
00:37:05Champagne with bubbles in it
00:37:07What?
00:37:07And put it shut it in and make it bounce
00:37:09Yeah
00:37:10Couple of more laps and I'll have it right under control
00:37:23Take it easy, Billy, you're not driving a hot rod now
00:37:26Ha, ha, ha, ha
00:37:51Ha, ha, ha, ha
00:37:56I'm in a crowd, yet I'm all alone.
00:38:19I'm all alone with you.
00:38:21Can't you feel it?
00:38:23Mommy, you wear it up for me.
00:38:26Give me a kiss.
00:38:27A little kiss on me.
00:38:28You've had too many kisses already.
00:38:30I don't feel well, do you?
00:38:31Oh, Billy, you're drunk.
00:38:33Mrs. Coy, I don't have a couple.
00:38:35Come in, sit down.
00:38:36There's something I've got to tell you.
00:38:38I can't wait till tomorrow morning.
00:38:40He's waiting too long already.
00:38:41Oh, let her wait.
00:38:43Who can that be at this hour?
00:38:44Who can that be?
00:38:45I've got friends.
00:38:46I've got millions of friends.
00:38:48Santa Claus.
00:38:49Well, we finally caught up with you.
00:38:51You're under arrest.
00:38:51Who's under arrest?
00:38:52What for?
00:38:53We went through a 30-mile zone, doing 85 miles an hour.
00:38:56What do you think you are, a racing driver?
00:38:58Oh, well, could be.
00:39:00Come along, son.
00:39:01We're going to give you a nice long Christmas present.
00:39:03Where's your red suit, Santa?
00:39:05Oh, Mommy, wait a minute.
00:39:07Wait a minute, Mommy.
00:39:16Where's that balloon brain?
00:39:17That's all I want to know.
00:39:18He had a day with Dolores last night.
00:39:20Maybe he figures you'll give him the trophy without racing for it.
00:39:22Well, in another 10 minutes, he won't be able to race.
00:39:26Don't think I wanted a baby.
00:39:27All right, did it for your mother.
00:39:28All right, so you told me that before.
00:39:30What you did last night gives a bad name for the whole sport.
00:39:33Oh, right.
00:39:33You want to drive fast?
00:39:34Save it for the speedway.
00:39:35So you want my bail.
00:39:36Do I have to listen to the lecture all night?
00:39:38And another thing.
00:39:40I don't think you should drive tonight.
00:39:43You're in no shape for it.
00:39:44Oh, what do you mean?
00:39:45I'm as steady as a rock.
00:39:47Hey!
00:39:49Hi, Billy.
00:39:49Hi, Happy.
00:39:50Where have you been?
00:39:51In jail, Deacon, in jail.
00:39:53Come on, let's get the 11th out on the track.
00:39:55I'll see you at the finish line.
00:39:57Well, come on, come on.
00:39:58Let's go, Deacon.
00:39:59Let's get it on the way.
00:40:00Come on, mechanical brain.
00:40:01We're in a minute.
00:40:01We'll be in a race.
00:40:02Let's go.
00:40:03Good luck, kid.
00:40:31Same to you, Happy.
00:40:33Here's car number 75.
00:40:35We have Happy Lee.
00:40:37So we're getting ready for a start now.
00:40:39And as soon as the green flag comes down,
00:40:40these drivers will be on their way for a 40-lapse domain event.
00:40:43Keep moving them over.
00:40:44Here they come in, feeding them flag.
00:40:45Over there, we have a 40-lapse.
00:41:01Oh, it ain't a lot of hassle.
00:41:05Of course, it's a lot of happy.
00:41:07There's going to be a team out here tonight with Billy Coy and Happy Lee.
00:41:10Happy is at number 75, and he calls them 6-10 for good luck.
00:41:14Happy Lee now brings over there, as he goes in between cars,
00:41:16coming in on the west turn again.
00:41:18And Billy Coy is starting to move now, too.
00:41:20Billy's back in fifth place now, but Happy Lee is starting to move now.
00:41:23Happy is progressing rapidly, and he's in second position.
00:41:26Hey, look at that tweet!
00:41:52The left rear, it's wobbling!
00:41:53He's going to lose it!
00:41:56Hey, look at his wheel!
00:41:57Whose wheel?
00:41:58Number 75!
00:41:59The left rear, it's grand wheel!
00:42:01And he might lose that wheel!
00:42:02And Happy Lee!
00:42:03And he knows coming about it whatsoever!
00:42:05Happy Lee is driving that car!
00:42:07Let her hurry change her situation right now!
00:42:13No!
00:42:14Oh!
00:42:15Happy Lee is still unaware of this exactly what's happening, and naturally he's still...
00:42:30Oh, wait!
00:42:30Oh, stay away from him, Billy!
00:42:32Don't get out of the car!
00:42:33I'm going to go!
00:42:33The flag will go down, there he is, the other flag down, and the team driver holds their position,
00:42:39and the driver brings her hand.
00:42:40What's the matter with Billy Coy?
00:42:42What is he trying to do out there?
00:42:44His friend is in trouble, and Coy is moving!
00:42:47Coy has to creep out of the yellow flag, waiting for that letter!
00:42:49Oh!
00:42:50Oh!
00:42:50Oh!
00:42:50Oh!

00:43:27Come on!
00:43:28Billy!
00:43:29Get down!

00:43:32Help me!
00:43:33Help me!
00:43:34Help me!
00:43:35Help me!
00:43:36Help me!
00:43:39Yeah!
00:43:41Help me!
00:43:42Oh!
00:43:43Oh!
00:43:44Oh!
00:43:46Oh!
00:43:47That was fun!
00:43:48Hang on, I can't bear that now!
00:43:49I can hang on one screen
00:43:50Hehehehe,
00:43:51I don't know.
00:44:21I'm too bad about Happy.
00:44:32Yeah.
00:44:34I tried to pawn love.
00:44:38Sure.
00:44:41He's my best friend.
00:44:44Yeah, I know.
00:44:46Glad you know that.
00:44:47Happy was my best friend.
00:44:51Come on, somebody say something.
00:45:01All right, come on, somebody say something!
00:45:09You want to hear it, do you?
00:45:10Okay, I'll give it to you straight from the gearbox.
00:45:17A lot of us here make our living driving race cars.
00:45:19Most of us try to stay alive when we get out on that track.
00:45:24It's a tough enough racket without asking for trouble.
00:45:27So then a punk comes along who says he's going to drive right over us.
00:45:31The only reason we don't smack him down right away is because we figure he don't mean it.
00:45:36We figure he's just flapping his big mouth.
00:45:38But you did mean it, didn't you, Knothead?
00:45:42A guy got killed because you tried to beat the yellow flag.
00:45:45You drove right over him, didn't you?
00:45:47It was an accident, Vic.
00:45:48Not an accident.
00:45:49Not when you asked for it.
00:45:50When you asked for it, it's murder.
00:45:52My own father got killed in an accident that way.
00:45:54Red, you know that.
00:45:55My own father got killed, didn't he?
00:45:57That's the difference between you and your old man.
00:45:59When you got drunk last night, another driver got killed.
00:46:01When Cannonball got drunk, he only killed himself.
00:46:04What are you trying to hand me?
00:46:05About you being drunk last night, that's no secret.
00:46:07You were loaded.
00:46:08I was not.
00:46:09What's this about my father?
00:46:10Cannonball?
00:46:10He was the lush.
00:46:11Everybody knows that.
00:46:11That's a stick and lie.
00:46:12Why don't you stop kidding yourself?
00:46:14Your old man was a souse and a chaser.
00:46:16Ask anybody.
00:46:17Ask Red.
00:46:18He finally had one dame in one bottle too many and he got his neck broken.
00:46:21That's a stick and lie.
00:46:23Down.
00:46:27Come on, bring it up.
00:46:33Now let him alone.
00:46:54That's enough.
00:46:57Now let me alone, will you?
00:47:03Mom.
00:47:05Mom!
00:47:06What is it, Billy?
00:47:07Billy, what is it?
00:47:07Mom, what kind of a man was my father?
00:47:09What, what, Andy?
00:47:10Never mind about that.
00:47:11What kind of a man was my father?
00:47:12What was my father the night before his last race?
00:47:16I don't know.
00:47:17He didn't come home.
00:47:19Was he drunk?
00:47:20Oh, he was in no condition to drive.
00:47:24Red begged him not to.
00:47:25Red Road with him.
00:47:26He had to protect him.
00:47:27What happened, Mom?
00:47:29I was watching them from the grandstand.
00:47:32Towards the last, I began to hope that they'd make it.
00:47:35That was the worst part of it, hoping again.
00:47:36Because as soon as I did, he went straight into the wall.
00:47:40When I got to him, he was dead.
00:47:42Then he was drunk.
00:47:48Oh, he was always irresponsible.
00:47:53And he chased after women, too?
00:47:56I suppose so.
00:47:59Oh, Mom, I...
00:48:00How could he do that to you?
00:48:03I always thought he was such a great guy.
00:48:09Always wanted to be just like him.
00:48:13Don't, Billy.
00:48:17Don't cry, Mom.
00:48:21Don't cry.
00:48:22Somehow I'll...
00:48:29Don't cry.
00:48:30Hey, I gotta...
00:48:32Take one of these.
00:48:34Thanks, Red.
00:48:40Oh, what are you doing here?
00:48:43Oh, Red, I...
00:48:45Came back to ask you if I could...
00:48:48Have my old job back.
00:48:50What for?
00:48:52Well, I'd like to drive number six, Rich.
00:48:55I'd like to take her out right now and get used to her, you know?
00:48:57I'll train for Indianapolis just like a fighter would train for a fight.
00:49:00Red, I want to know that motor, you know, just like a book.
00:49:03I want to see what you'll do on the turns.
00:49:05I'm sorry, kid.
00:49:07You mean you can't use me, Red?
00:49:09I can't afford you.
00:49:10Oh, you don't have to pay me anything.
00:49:12Pay me what you like.
00:49:14No dice.
00:49:18Thanks, anyway.
00:49:21Hey.
00:49:22I've just been looking for you.
00:49:24Yeah?
00:49:25Red's rebuilding number 50.
00:49:27So what?
00:49:28Well, it'll take him two or three weeks, so I'd go out and get myself another ride if I were you.
00:49:32Does that mean I'm all washed up with you?
00:49:35You know what you cost me yesterday?
00:49:37Six thousand bucks.
00:49:39So what?
00:49:40You risk your dough?
00:49:40I risk my neck at 60-40.
00:49:43Well, you don't need to risk your neck anymore.
00:49:45Not on my account.
00:49:46Well, how about that estimate, Red?
00:49:48Well, you don't need to risk your neck at 60-40.
00:50:19Yeah?
00:50:21I think I tried to hit him on purpose.
00:50:23Uh-huh.
00:50:25What, do you think I like putting a wheel through the wall?
00:50:28Look.
00:50:29I got work to do.
00:50:31Go tell your troubles to somebody else, will you?
00:50:33Murderer?
00:50:34Thank you, Billy?
00:50:56Bill?
00:50:56Bill?
00:50:58Bill?
00:51:06Bill?
00:51:15You're all Murray.
00:51:23How about I come up and see if you have any socks that need mending?
00:51:26Here's a pair that could do with a little attention.
00:51:35Is there anything you want to talk about?
00:51:41Take these downstairs.
00:51:43Mom.
00:51:44Yes, dear.
00:51:47Yes.
00:51:49Nobody wants me anymore.
00:51:52Oh, Dilly.
00:51:55Oh.
00:51:57I wouldn't say that, dear.
00:52:00I asked every owner over at the track.
00:52:03They were all after me last month.
00:52:05Now nobody wants me.
00:52:09Why don't you give it up, dear?
00:52:12Everybody has to stop racing sooner or later.
00:52:14Maybe this is the time for you to quit.
00:52:16I can't quit, Mom.
00:52:17I can't quit while I'm a failure.
00:52:19But a man can fail at one thing and be a success at something else.
00:52:22I can't.
00:52:24Driving is what I do best.
00:52:26If I fail now, it means I'll fail at everything I do all my life.
00:52:30Billy, did you ever stop to really think how I must feel when you're out at the racetrack?
00:52:40Every time your father drove, I had to sit in the grandstand and pray that he'd still be alive when the race was over.
00:52:46Every lap you drove, I died a little.
00:52:51You drove a hundred laps, I died a hundred times.
00:52:56In Indianapolis.
00:53:00And now I'm having to go through the whole thing all over again.
00:53:02Every time you're out on the racetrack, I don't draw a deep breath till you're home again.
00:53:10Every time the telephone rings, it seems to me I can't bear it.
00:53:15Sorry you feel that way, Mom.
00:53:17Oh, give it up, Billy.
00:53:19Give it up before it's too late.
00:53:23I can't, Mom.
00:53:25I'm sorry, but I can't.
00:53:27But you said something that started me thinking.
00:53:38You said a guy could fail at one thing and make good at another.
00:53:42Well, a guy could fail at one place and make good someplace else.
00:53:46Yes, dear, that's true.
00:53:49Well, now, I'll have to stay around here.
00:53:52What?
00:53:53Go back east where the big cars are and the big dough.
00:53:56Oh, Mom, I'll send for you as soon as everything is all right.
00:54:02Don't worry about me, son.
00:54:05Just take care of yourself.
00:54:19Billy.
00:54:20Hi, Lou.
00:54:22I'm terribly sorry about Happy.
00:54:24You must feel just awful.
00:54:26Thanks for saying that.
00:54:29Nobody else did.
00:54:30I heard Deacon say you weren't going to drive four bits anymore.
00:54:33Do you want me to talk to my father?
00:54:36Never mind.
00:54:38Once we're driving around here, I'm getting out.
00:54:41Out of racing?
00:54:42Out of California.
00:54:43I'm going back east.
00:54:44Is it because of her?
00:54:45I saw you going to that nightclub last week.
00:54:47Well, if you'd have waited ten minutes, you'd have seen me come right out again.
00:54:50Oh.
00:54:50I just want someone to tell my troubles to.
00:54:55Look, Billy.
00:54:56If you need someone to talk to...
00:54:58I can always talk to you, Ken, I know.
00:55:03You know you can.
00:55:06I'm going to level with you.
00:55:07You know that...
00:55:08That cute little hat you wore the other day?
00:55:10Silly thing with the feathers.
00:55:12No, no, it was a swell-looking hat and a swell girl was wearing it, too.
00:55:15But right now, I...
00:55:17I haven't got time for any other kind of gear except this.
00:55:21Then I won't be seeing you anymore.
00:55:23Are you going to be in Indianapolis on Memorial Day?
00:55:37Uh-huh.
00:55:39I'll be there, too.
00:55:41And I'll see you there, won't I?
00:55:44Got a date, Lois.
00:55:46Sure.
00:55:53What are you giving the kid?
00:56:11Oh, you know how boys are.
00:56:13He doesn't write much.
00:56:14But he does send me a money order every week with love scrawled across it.
00:56:23Well, he's doing good now, all right.
00:56:28Won three straight main events.
00:56:31I wish he'd never win a race.
00:56:34Then perhaps he'd quit.
00:56:35Oh, now, Mary.
00:56:36Oh, I'm upset, Arthur.
00:56:38I had a bad dream last night.
00:56:40He's driving at Salem tomorrow.
00:56:43I saw him driving straight to the concrete wall.
00:56:45Smashed right into it.
00:56:47Head on.
00:56:48Then I heard him cry.
00:56:50I got a little child crying.
00:56:52That was no hunch, Mary.
00:56:55Those were your fears you were dreaming.
00:56:58Oh, I hate racing.
00:57:00I hate everything about it.
00:57:01Oh, no.
00:57:02No, you don't.
00:57:03You don't hate everything about it.
00:57:06Don't hate me, do you?
00:57:09No, I don't hate you, Red.
00:57:20Begging your pardon, Mary.
00:57:22But I love you.
00:57:28I'll take care of you.
00:57:30I'll take good care of you.
00:57:34Take care of Billy, will you, Red?
00:57:36Please take care of him.
00:57:37Thanks a lot.
00:57:59Bye.
00:57:59All right.
00:58:05Come in.
00:58:08Hiya, Mommy.
00:58:09Billy!
00:58:10Oh, darling.
00:58:12How are you doing?
00:58:14How are you?
00:58:15Bye.
00:58:16How's your legs?
00:58:17Oh, it's as good as new.
00:58:18You got my letter?
00:58:19Yeah, about you marrying Red?
00:58:21Red?
00:58:22Oh, he's such a fine man.
00:58:24Hello, kid.
00:58:25Hi, Red.
00:58:26Hey, look.
00:58:29I hope it's all right with you.
00:58:30Me getting married to your mother.
00:58:33Yeah, sure, it's all right with me.
00:58:35What's the matter with you two other?
00:58:37You like each other.
00:58:38We like each other.
00:58:39Hello, kid.
00:58:41There's one thing I want you to know.
00:58:43The reason why I wouldn't let you drive six is because you were too inexperienced.
00:58:47Yeah, sure.
00:58:48Well, I didn't want you to get your neck broken.
00:58:50Uh-huh.
00:58:51But I never thought you had anything to do with Happy getting killed.
00:58:54You didn't?
00:58:55No.
00:58:56You weren't overdriving the yellow flag.
00:58:58You were just trying to catch up with him to show him he was losing his wheel.
00:59:05That's the way it was, Red.
00:59:07We all know that now.
00:59:08Honest?
00:59:09Sure.
00:59:13You know, I didn't, uh...
00:59:14I didn't write you and...
00:59:16Mom much after you got married, did I?
00:59:18No, you didn't.
00:59:19Didn't get to congratulate you.
00:59:21But congratulations now, Red.
00:59:23Well...
00:59:24Thanks, kid.
00:59:25Thanks a lot.
00:59:26Mm-hmm.
00:59:27Mm-hmm.
00:59:33Yes, ladies and gentlemen, another day of qualifying here at world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
00:59:37And let me tell you, newcomers to the automobile racing game, that these time trials are definitely wild and certainly dangerous.
00:59:44How many of you know what I'm talking about?
00:59:47You've seen the days previous to this day of qualification.
00:59:50When the cars have cracked into the retaining wall and they've turned over and caught on fire thinking of cars in the area where the car is completely out of control.
00:59:58Now, again, the time trial situation is at hand.
01:00:01And these cars must travel around the huge and certainly very dangerous two and one-half mile oval four times.
01:00:07That's a ten-mile qualification run and all these drivers are struggling down hard, attempting to break every cracked record.
01:00:13Hiya, buddy.
01:00:14See, I'm glad to see you.
01:00:15All right, all right.
01:00:16Break that up, you guys.
01:00:17Huh?
01:00:18You heard me.
01:00:19Say, what are you doing down here in the pits?
01:00:20You know women aren't allowed down here.
01:00:21Oh, I'm okay with the gang.
01:00:22They won't squeal.
01:00:23Oh.
01:00:24I was hoping you'd be here two weeks ago in time to get a ride.
01:00:25Well, they didn't let me out of the hospital until Wednesday.
01:00:26Would you like me to introduce you to some of the owners?
01:00:27Gee, that'd be swell.
01:00:28Say, by the way, whatever happened to number one?
01:00:29Have you qualified yet?
01:00:30No, we haven't tried yet.
01:00:31You haven't qualified yet?
01:00:32I haven't qualified yet.
01:00:33Well, Vic and Dad are having some kind of an argument.
01:00:34They're over in the garage now.
01:00:35Well, what are we waiting for?
01:00:37I'm through horsing around, Reno.
01:00:38It's 40% of the person I walk.
01:00:40You've got no place to walk.
01:00:41You've got no car to ride.
01:00:42A ride is too late now.
01:00:43Oh, I'm not.
01:00:44I'm not.
01:00:45I'm not.
01:00:46I'm not.
01:00:47I'm not.
01:00:48I'm not.
01:00:49I'm not.
01:00:50I'm not.
01:00:51I'm not.
01:00:52I'm not.
01:00:53I'm not.
01:00:54You're not.
01:00:55I'm not.
01:00:56I'm not.
01:00:57I'm not.
01:00:58I'm not.
01:00:59I'm not.
01:01:00It's too late now.
01:01:01Okay, my friend.
01:01:02I'll drive number six for Red Stanley.
01:01:03Can't do that either.
01:01:04He's already got a chauffeur.
01:01:05Uh-uh.
01:01:06He had a chauffeur.
01:01:07Sonny quit last night.
01:01:08Why?
01:01:09Because number six couldn't make 125 miles an hour and it'll take 125 to qualify.
01:01:13Well, Sonny didn't know how to handle a front-wheel drive.
01:01:16I do.
01:01:17After all, number six has the same power plan as this car.
01:01:20And if I can make it with this one, I can make it with number six.
01:01:23So long, Reno.
01:01:25Wait a minute, Vic.
01:01:26You can't do that.
01:01:27Don't be a dummy now.
01:01:28What are you...
01:01:29Daddy, you remember Billy Coyne, don't you?
01:01:31Yeah, hello, Billy.
01:01:32Billy won the 100-mile swing take to Dayton last month.
01:01:34He did?
01:01:35And the 50-lap feature at Richmond.
01:01:36Oh, foolin'.
01:01:37He got a second in Oswego and the trophy dash at Williams Grove.
01:01:39What was that, midgets?
01:01:40Those are big carts.
01:01:42Well, ever handle a front-wheel drive, son?
01:01:45Oh, I handled a front-wheel offie at Dayton.
01:01:48Yeah, we might be able to make a deal here.
01:01:49How'd you like to drive number one for me in the 500?
01:01:52What?
01:01:53I'd like it.
01:01:54Just great.
01:01:55Huh.
01:01:59Here comes Vic Sullivan out of the north turn into the home stretch straight away,
01:02:02driving the Stanley special car number six.
01:02:04Will he take the white flag signifying one lap remaining to go?
01:02:07Will he take it?
01:02:08Will he take it?
01:02:09He does not take the white flag.
01:02:10He does not take the white flag at all.
01:02:12Oh, man.
01:02:13Pull him off the track.
01:02:14Will the owner of the car have a chance to make a few last-minute repairs and adjustments,
01:02:17and two more chances to qualify the car for the big race.
01:02:22Hi, Reno.
01:02:23What's the matter about Fred?
01:02:25Well, son, you all ready to blow off those turns this morning?
01:02:28Sure am.
01:02:29I'll keep that throttle right down to the floorboard all the way.
01:02:30No brakes, huh?
01:02:31No brakes.
01:02:32That's what I like about the way you drive, kid.
01:02:34You got initiative.
01:02:35I remember what you used to say out in California.
01:02:37You used to say, I'll drive right over them.
01:02:40Did I?
01:02:41Yeah, I was there the day I drove over Happy Lee.
01:02:43Wait a minute, Reno.
01:02:45Boy, did you jump that yellow flag.
01:02:47I'll bet you beat him 20 yards.
01:02:49I didn't beat any yellow flag.
01:02:50I was trying to catch Happy to tell him he was losing his wheel.
01:02:52Oh, sure.
01:02:55Don't give me none of that oh, sure business.
01:02:57You talk as if I tried to kill the guy.
01:02:59I didn't say you killed the guy.
01:03:01I said you drove over him.
01:03:02All right, so the boy got killed.
01:03:03This is racing.
01:03:04You got to take chances.
01:03:05What kind of chances did you ever take, you phony?
01:03:08Looks like I took one chance too many when I hired a fresh kid to drive for me.
01:03:11Looks like you got to try and find another driver too cause I'm through Reno.
01:03:15Why you dirty little grease monkey.
01:03:17Billy.
01:03:18Billy.
01:03:19Billy.
01:03:21Billy, you're not mad at me are you?
01:03:23I'm not mad at you buddy.
01:03:24Then why don't you go back and talk to Red Stanley.
01:03:26He's looking for a driver.
01:03:27What would he be looking for anybody for when he has Vic?
01:03:30Vic couldn't get her up to qualifying speed so he quit.
01:03:38Yes ladies and gentlemen.
01:03:39We're in the midst of another day of qualifications.
01:03:41And right now the starter is waving all the drivers off of the track.
01:03:45That we can prepare for the next time trial.
01:03:48Which will be on the speedway in just a moment.
01:03:54Oh.
01:03:55How was she Gretz?
01:03:56Well you can see for yourself.
01:03:58What night TV?
01:03:59Oh I don't know.
01:04:00It doesn't seem to have any soap on the turns.
01:04:02Well I reset the plugs.
01:04:03I changed the adjustment on the carburetor.
01:04:05I switched the fuel.
01:04:06What's that?
01:04:07What's what?
01:04:08Well that doesn't look like the same supercharger that Reno had.
01:04:10His was way bigger.
01:04:11Well Dad had a special job put on it.
01:04:12They said it would compensate for the higher temperature.
01:04:14Yeah I thought of that.
01:04:16I tried to get one.
01:04:19Any luck boss?
01:04:20Sure.
01:04:21Well come on let's get started.
01:04:22Get in the car back.
01:04:23Alright Reno don't blow your gasket.
01:04:24I told you I'd drive it and I will.
01:04:26We've got 10 minutes to qualify.
01:04:27Come on start the motor.
01:04:29Contact.
01:04:31Well come on.
01:04:32It won't start.
01:04:33What do you mean it won't start?
01:04:34Well get under the hood.
01:04:35Check the plug.
01:04:36Come on do something.
01:04:37Move move move.
01:04:38Come on get in there.
01:04:40How do you want to start?
01:04:41There's no blower.
01:04:42What do you mean no blower?
01:04:43I put it on myself.
01:04:44Look Reno if you're trying to get cute with me I'm going to bust you wide open.
01:04:47Me get cute with you.
01:04:48You bring back that supercharger or I'll have you barred for life.
01:04:50He can't bring it back.
01:04:52What do you mean he can't bring it back?
01:04:54Because he doesn't know where it is.
01:04:55Do you know where it is?
01:04:56Sure it's on number six.
01:04:58Red took it.
01:04:59I'll have him arrested.
01:05:00Get a cop.
01:05:01Red didn't take it.
01:05:02I gave it to him.
01:05:03You gave it to him?
01:05:04Why?
01:05:05Because there wasn't another one in Indianapolis and I wanted Billy to have a chance.
01:05:06So you gave him my supercharger.
01:05:07No I gave him my supercharger.
01:05:08It's my car isn't it?
01:05:10Oh.
01:05:11Now on the speedway for the third and final trial the Stanley Special car number six driven
01:05:17by Billy Coy.
01:05:18That's all.
01:05:19Look.
01:05:20I warned you about having those kind of children.
01:05:22Remember?
01:05:23If I...
01:05:24If I...
01:05:26Now they'll be moving along.
01:05:29We'll see if you'll think that green flag could be on his way for 10 miles.
01:05:34Wartime's around.
01:05:35The scale's 2 and 1 half final track.
01:05:36Here he comes.
01:05:37He's waiting for that flag to come down but he did not take the flag.
01:05:38Smart kid.
01:05:39He wasn't really wound up.
01:05:40Listen to us sing.
01:05:41He did not walk in the air which signaled the starter that he did not want to start and
01:05:50therefore he'll go around once more and we'll see if he'll take the flag as he moves in over
01:05:55there on the south turn.
01:05:57That means he's trying to take the flag and we'll watch that flag come down.
01:06:25Coy's hand is still near.
01:06:27Now he pulls his hand down.
01:06:28Here comes the bike out from the starter.
01:06:30And Billy Coy is flying ladies and gentlemen for 10 miles.
01:06:32Incidentally Billy Coy just turned the first lap at 127.40 miles an hour.
01:06:59Here comes Billy Coy completing lap number 3.
01:07:17And now if the right flight comes down for him signifying only one lap an inning to go.
01:07:22No.
01:07:23He's going to make it.
01:07:24Keep the finger crossed.
01:07:25He's going to make it.
01:07:26Keep the finger crossed.
01:07:29He's going to make it.
01:07:30Keep the finger crossed.
01:07:31He's going to make it.
01:07:32Keep the finger crossed.
01:07:36He's going to make it.
01:07:38He's not taking it.
01:07:39He's going to make it.
01:07:40He's going to make it.
01:07:41He's going to make it.
01:07:42I know what's going on.
01:07:43On the second lap, 126.45 miles per hour, and at lap number three, 115.40 miles per hour.
01:07:52I don't get it.
01:07:53I'll never make it now.
01:07:54What happened? Could it be the time, Riggins?
01:07:56I don't know what happened.
01:07:57Well, I guess I gotta start all over again.
01:08:02Now the year gone.
01:08:06Oh, what a tough break.
01:08:07Think of it.
01:08:08127.40 miles per hour in the first lap.
01:08:10On the second lap, 126.45, and then on that third lap, 115.40.
01:08:17Ladies and gentlemen, I can't understand what could have happened,
01:08:19because on the fourth lap, Billy Coy turned at 126.20.
01:08:23It's a tough break indeed.
01:08:27Sorry, Riggins.
01:08:28Well, I guess old number six just hasn't got it.
01:08:31The time is six o'clock.
01:08:33The qualifying for the big race is finished.
01:08:35Oh, that's that.
01:08:36Car 92, Al Harmon driving, will be the final 33rd car in the race.
01:08:40He qualified at a speed of 125.46 miles an hour.
01:08:44Vic Sullivan, car number one, failed to qualify because of mechanical trouble.
01:08:49Mechanical nothing due to robbery, due to thieves.
01:08:50I'll have you arrested.
01:08:51Oh, get lost.
01:08:52And I'd sue you for damages, but you haven't got anything.
01:08:54You won't even have a garage when I get through with you.
01:08:56I don't know what you're talking about.
01:08:58I'm talking about my supercharger.
01:09:00You took it.
01:09:00Loose, son.
01:09:01It was a spare.
01:09:02I'm out of the race.
01:09:03Attention, please.
01:09:04Attention, please.
01:09:04A correction.
01:09:05A correction on Billy Coy's time.
01:09:07Car number six.
01:09:08Coy's official time, ladies and gentlemen, is faster than that of Al Harmon.
01:09:11Because of a blot on the electric timer, the error was made.
01:09:15So Billy Coy qualifies for the big race.
01:09:18Oh, you made it.
01:09:19It was wonderful driving.
01:09:20You made it.
01:09:21I made it.
01:09:24You stole my supercharger.
01:09:26Well, I...
01:09:28Oh.
01:09:28Yeah.
01:09:33How do you do, ladies and gentlemen?
01:09:45This is Jack Coy and welcoming every one of you to the 33rd running of the 500-mile national
01:09:49championship automobile race here in Indianapolis, Indiana.
01:09:52This is an international event.
01:09:54Yes, people from all over the world have been here for days.
01:09:57The hotels are completely sold out.
01:09:59It certainly is a wonderful sight to see all of these people coming from every state in
01:10:03the Union out here to see the greatest automobile race of all time.
01:10:07Oh, ladies and gentlemen, this is really out of this world.
01:10:30Full-time vintage cars now parading down the home stretch and, believe it or not, under
01:10:34their own power, make some models of days gone by with driver and companion attired
01:10:38in early 1900 clothes.
01:10:40Well, down in the pits, all 33 starting cars are being checked over for minor mechanical
01:10:45trouble by the mechanics, the car owners, and the remainder of the pit crews, too.
01:10:49Anything in the way of mechanical difficulty, you know, can keep a car from starting the
01:10:52big race.
01:10:53Right now, the cars are going to be shoved under the speedway next to the pit wall, and
01:10:57the car owner is giving their drivers last-minute instructions.
01:11:01Well, Red, is there anything else you want to tell me?
01:11:02Yeah.
01:11:03Now, this is a long grind, kid, so don't try to win it in the first hundred miles.
01:11:07Stay in striking distance and be ready to come in.
01:11:09All right, gotcha.
01:11:10I figure I'll come in for gas around 275.
01:11:13Yeah, that's right.
01:11:14Now, take a look at the north turn.
01:11:18See that crosswind?
01:11:19Yeah.
01:11:21Doesn't look like much from here, but at the end of a long race, it's murder.
01:11:25Go in low and stay in the groove.
01:11:27I hope I got you, Red.
01:11:29Well, that's all, I guess.
01:11:30Good luck, kid.
01:11:32Thanks, Red.
01:11:32Good luck, Bill.
01:11:33Thanks, George.
01:11:34Good luck, Billy.
01:11:35I sure hope you win.
01:11:36Right, Lou.
01:11:37Got your mind on the race level, boy.
01:11:39Don't worry about me.
01:11:40Attention, please, ladies and gentlemen.
01:11:43The big moment is about to take place.
01:11:45The big 500-mile Decoration Day race is about to begin.
01:11:49The cars are on the speedway.
01:11:51The pace car directly in front of the first three lead cars.
01:11:54The pace car driven by the president of Indiana at the speedway, Wilbur Shaw.
01:11:59The lead cars on the pole, Duke Nailon.
01:12:02In the center of the first row, Rex Faze.
01:12:04And on the outside is Jack McGrath, the three lead cars.
01:12:12There they go.
01:12:13Moving out of the south turn, down the backstretch.
01:12:16And in the sixth row, ladies and gentlemen, the great human interest story of this year's race,
01:12:20the second generation of a famous name at the wheel of car six, the Stanley Special, Billy Coy.
01:12:33And ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to mention the fact that Billy Coy is the son of Cannonball Coy,
01:12:38the great driver of yesterday, who was killed at the north turn of this racetrack.
01:12:48A long-awaited moment, ladies and gentlemen, is almost here.
01:12:52The pace car coming out of the northwest turned down the straightaway
01:12:54with the 33 starters following in their proper order.
01:12:57They're coming down.
01:12:59This is it, ladies and gentlemen.
01:13:01The big 500-mile race is almost underway.
01:13:03They're coming down now to take that green flag.
01:13:06As soon as the flag goes down, they'll be on their way and they'll go.
01:13:09The great team is coming out.
01:13:11They're going to be able to go.
01:13:12They're going to be able to go.
01:13:13They're going to be able to go.
01:13:14500 miles.
01:13:16Two players running in the lead now.
01:13:18As we go to the loud western.
01:13:33At the end of one moment, ladies and gentlemen, leading by the Car Lakes is Duke Naylan.
01:14:01Rex Mays is running in second, and for you California fans, Billy Coy is running in 17th position.
01:14:18This is the center of a spin.
01:14:24And the car is in the infield, and George Linton's climbing out of the car.
01:14:28How those other cars got away from George, I'll never know.
01:14:32It's unbelievable.
01:14:49Ladies and gentlemen, with these cars removing, Duke Naylan has broken the one with track record at 128 points and one-half miles per hour.
01:14:57Come on, look, come on!
01:15:21Come on!
01:17:23Come on, Billy.
01:17:24They're nearing the halfway point.
01:17:26And still in the lead is Bill Holland for Billy Coy.
01:17:31Billy Coy, the California sharpshooter, is really moving up.
01:17:35And certainly in the baseline for the ship.
01:17:37There goes Bill Holland and corner 7 in the lead.
01:17:40They're moving by us now on the red sand before we roll the R3.
01:18:08The yellow flags are out, ladies and gentlemen, signifying all drivers to hold their position.
01:18:28There's not a lot happening out here this afternoon.
01:18:31There's another spin.
01:18:32Another spin in that far turn.
01:18:33The car's on fire, ladies and gentlemen.
01:18:44And the driver, I think it's Saris.
01:18:47He's laying on the track right now.
01:18:49The drivers have their hands in the air.
01:18:51That means a clear position for the boys behind the respective drivers.
01:18:55They're taking Saris off of the track now.
01:18:58The other driver seems to be in very, very bad condition right now.
01:19:01That means furriness.
01:19:03The drivers are getting tired.
01:19:04The green flag is down again.
01:19:10The green flag has gone down again.
01:19:13Holland, find the pitch for a spark plug chain.
01:19:16It'll be just a matter of moments before that car's back on the track.
01:19:20Where are you with the gas?
01:19:21Up there, right?
01:19:22The lawyer received his instructions okay from his pit crew.
01:19:35And we'll be moving in now for fuel.
01:19:38There goes Billy Coy to pit number six.
01:19:42How do you feel, Pete?
01:19:43Okay, where do we stand?
01:19:44When you pull out of here, you'll be for the pit.
01:19:47She's planning like a kitten.
01:19:48If we have any luck, we're going to take it off.
01:19:49Now watch out for yourself.
01:19:50We've got an all-turn, one mistake there.
01:19:52And you're losing.
01:19:53Oh, he's all set, Billy.
01:19:54All right, I'll try to catch it.
01:19:55Oh, ladies and gentlemen, what a sensational pit crew for car number six.
01:19:59They review that car in no time at all.
01:20:01Oh, wait a minute.
01:20:02There's something wrong down there.
01:20:04Car number six, it won't start.
01:20:06It is not going to start the way it looks right now.
01:20:08There's something wrong with the engine.
01:20:09Probably spark plugs.
01:20:11Oh, what a tough break.
01:20:12There comes plenty of cars by again.
01:20:14Connors and Parsons have gone by.
01:20:15Billy Coy's losing their precious time.
01:20:19All right.
01:20:20That's all right.
01:20:21Let's go.
01:20:23Oh, ladies and gentlemen, will that car start?
01:20:26Well, no, I don't think it is.
01:20:28It is back on the track.
01:20:29There's a real great person who's red.
01:20:32And Parsons is back on the speedway.
01:20:38Billy Coy has moved back on the speedway again, ladies and gentlemen.
01:20:41And Billy Coy has a lot of mileage to make up right now,
01:20:44having been in the pits, even for that short time.
01:20:47Now they're all moving around the turn.
01:20:49Bill Cohen is still in the lead,
01:20:51followed by Tommy Parsons, George Conner,
01:20:53and Billy Coy is back there fighting it out for sixth place.
01:20:56OH!
01:21:08No!
01:21:10No!
01:21:15No!
01:21:16Yeah!
01:21:17No!
01:21:17Mind!
01:21:17There's a spin and we're turnin' in!
01:21:24He's on the track! He gets up, though!
01:21:29He gets up! What a spectacular track up that was!
01:21:34Lots of carbon paper is being thrown from the exhaust of the various cars right under the driver's goggles.
01:21:51And that's pretty tough when they have to take one hand off that wheel and keep wiping the paper over their goggles.
01:21:56Billy Coy, the boy from California, is trying desperately to move back into Kentucky for a first place
01:22:01because Bill Holland driving the blue ground is right smack in the lead,
01:22:04and we think at the present time that he's going to stay in the lead.
01:22:08I wonder anything can happen in this track because you've seen accidents all afternoon.
01:22:12There's the starbust men down there on that car turning behind!
01:22:20They're all right, but they're right on the track, and the drivers get by them!
01:22:23And they are by them! The other flag went out, and the drivers are flying out of their car.
01:22:27Dale and Spalding, a very close call indeed!
01:22:31And now, ladies and gentlemen, the leg has been served for Speedway.
01:22:35But right now on the back stretch, we're watching Billy Coy as he has moved into fourth position,
01:22:39and he's challenging for the lead. Bill Holland is still in third.
01:22:41Dan Subrad is moving up very fast than Bill Holland.
01:22:44But here comes Billy Coy. Here he comes very fast on the outside now of Ted Frankie in car number one.
01:22:49And he's on his way now to left car number 36. The car is one left behind Billy Coy.
01:22:53Billy Coy's in third, but Grant's in second.
01:22:56Come on, McGrath! Come on, McGrath! Come on, McGrath! Come on, McGrath!
01:23:02Come on, McGrath! Come on, McGrath! Ah, come on, McGrath!
01:23:04He's a great driver, ain't he? That's my son.
01:23:06You mean your track of crash, Mother? No, the other one, Billy Coy!
01:23:10Coy!
01:23:11Come on you, Coy! Come on you, Coy! Come on, you Coy!
01:23:14This is one of the most sensational races I've ever seen in my life. Ladies and gentlemen, they're both Billy Coy.
01:23:18He is moved by the second place car on the grass, and he is now in second place all by himself, which means he's going after him.
01:23:24Now, for first place, what a sensational driver, Cannonball Coy, as great as his father was.
01:23:31Ah, what did I tell you? That kid's got one of teeks. I'll take my hand off, my bad sir.
01:23:42That's why he came out from his pits to pass number seven, and that's Bill Holland.
01:24:01There's a spin! There's a spin down there by Wilkins. Doe Caris is across the track.
01:24:13But he looks like he's all right. There is no gasoline on the Speedway. That was Doe Caris and Wilkins.
01:24:19The race is about what a sensational race. Troy Billy Coy is riding this afternoon.
01:24:24Now he's starting to move up with Bill Holland, the leader. The old-time veteran is Bill Holland.
01:24:27And of course, the newcomer, the Indianapolis Speedway is Billy Coy. Can Coy take Holland?
01:24:33Can he take it? We'll see if he can take it. It's very, very doubtful, but you can't tell.
01:24:37Anything can happen right now. But Coy is showing his old speed to his father.
01:24:40He's moved up now body to body with Bill Holland. First it's Holland in the lead, and then back to Coy.
01:24:45But Coy is going to be starting to move up, but he's very, very fast now.
01:24:48And I think he might do it, and he is going to do it. He does past Bill Holland now.
01:24:53And Billy Coy from the west coast in front of the lead. Bill Holland's in second.
01:24:58And Johnny Parsons is in third.
01:25:01He always stays out of trouble.
01:25:03Now, ladies and gentlemen, the flag is down. The white flag is down. One left remaining to go now.
01:25:08The white flag is on fire into the far side of the trash wall, and the whole wall is on fire.
01:25:25One of the first wires I've ever seen here in Indianapolis. We'll have to let you know with the driver as soon as we're notified.
01:25:30Can you tell who it is? No, it's Duke.
01:25:42They've got to try. Do it. Where's Billy?
01:25:45Here comes Coy. He's coming into the north third. And the car's in front of Billy Coy.
01:25:49One of us, Bill, lives behind him. They're going to score at speed. They get away.
01:25:53And around the plane winner comes Coy. Coy goes through. He's not alone now. But he got through okay.
01:25:59Look, ladies and gentlemen, that car number six is on fire.
01:26:02That's the standard. Look at the engine. It's on fire.
01:26:06He's hitting those flames. This is the time we're going to go now.
01:26:10He's on fire. He's on fire. He's on fire. He's on fire.
01:26:13And if there's a good chance he'll never even finish it now, if that car does blow up, if those flames from that engine ever get to that gasp.
01:26:19He's a sure daughter. His poor mother is sitting on the stairs. We can certainly see how she feels.
01:26:24Because she witnessed one of her husband Cannonball Coy was killed out here 18 years ago because of fire.
01:26:29What's Billy Coy going to do? He better jump, fight us, and get out of that car.
01:26:32He better jump, but no. He's going to bring that car home.
01:26:35That's the last thing he does. He says he's gone this far. And he's going to go all the way.
01:26:39Bill Holland passes Billy Coy. Bill Holland's in first position now.
01:26:43And Tommy Johnson's on fire in the second. Bill Holland has moved the winner, ladies and gentlemen.
01:26:48And they're going to be quiet, but he's not safe.
01:26:51And he's going to go.
01:26:53And he's going to go.
01:26:55And he's going to go.
01:26:58He's going to go.
01:27:00He's going to go.
01:27:02He's going to go.
01:27:03And now he's going to get out of that car before it's too late.
01:27:06It might be too late. It might be. He's trying to get out of that car.
01:27:09Yes, please.
01:27:11It's a hard kick your arms are burnt. Let's find a doctor.
01:27:21Never mind about my arms. A race runner.
01:27:23We'll rebuild and try again next year.
01:27:25Yeah, with whose dough?
01:27:26Came in third.
01:27:27Look at those cars that passed me.
01:27:29All but two are in another lap.
01:27:31Third?
01:27:32Yes. That gives us enough to build any car we want.
01:27:35Come on, now. Let's get your arms mixed.
01:27:39And now, moving into the green lane,
01:27:41it's Bill Holland, car number seven, the Blue Crown,
01:27:46a runner-up for two years in a row,
01:27:48and this year, 1949, it's Bill Holland here.
01:27:55Now, don't worry.
01:27:56Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please.
01:27:59Bill Holland has made one of those wonderful sporting gestures
01:28:01that make automobile racing the sport that it really is.
01:28:05He will not receive the famous BorgWarner trophy,
01:28:07the cup that has always been presented to the winner of this race,
01:28:10but he insists that the officials award custody of the BorgWarner trophy
01:28:14to a driver who did not win the race,
01:28:17but who won the hearts of the whole racing world
01:28:19with his skill, his daring, and his great courage.
01:28:22We present the trophy to Billy Cannonball Calling.
01:28:39THE END
