00:00My name is Mike Rowe and this is my job.
00:03I explore the country looking for people who aren't afraid to get dirty.
00:06Hard-working men and women who do the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us.
00:12Sometimes I hear the dirty jobs theme in my dreams.
00:16But when I wake up, I'm always gratified to know that over the last five years, we've lived up to it.
00:22We've been to the top of the tallest bridge and the depths of the lowliest sewer.
00:27From coal mines to cattle ranches to crab boats to steel mills.
00:32We've had our hands on the country's infrastructure.
00:35We've met some of the best people you could ever hope to accidentally run into.
00:41And I've personally done some things to turkeys and sheep that I'm not comfortable talking about.
00:47The point is, after 200 filthy adventures, that's enough to make a fellow want to look back and reflect and celebrate.
00:53And that is exactly what we're going to do.
00:57But not tonight.
00:59Sorry.
01:00Tonight, there's work to be done.
01:02Serious work.
01:03Important work.
01:04The kind of work that keeps this country moving.
01:07The kind of work that, if done properly, will keep polite society out of the ditch.
01:14The kind of work that just might get this country back on track.
01:18Now, for the 200th time, get ready to get dirty.
01:26Coming up on Dirty Jobs, in Boise, Idaho, they build trains from the ground up.
01:30This is no kidding a hazardous place.
01:32This is no kidding a very hazardous place.
01:34And for my 200th job...
01:36Oh my goodness!
01:37We thought some fireworks would be appropriate.
01:39I just didn't know they'd be in my pants.
01:42And later...
01:43Step back.
01:44I got the cheater bar.
01:45You could call it the locomotive Nutcracker Suite.
01:47You got it moving a little bit.
01:49Or maybe the bass-ackwards ballet.
01:51The only problem is they're on the tightening, not loosening.
01:53Yeah.
01:54You're kidding.
01:55No.
01:56Righty, tighty, lefty, loosening.
01:57The two experts just watched me tighten this thing beyond...
01:59I just...
02:00Oh, God.
02:02Dirty Jobs is presented by the all-new 09 F-150.
02:18It's not just a new truck.
02:19It's a new F-150.
02:21This is a locomotive.
02:22It's not quite done yet.
02:24Neither is that one.
02:25They make locomotives here, all day long, every day.
02:29Nearly 300,000 square feet, 40-some-odd acres.
02:33This is a huge place.
02:34And this locomotive is eventually going to haul commuters back and forth somewhere in Maryland.
02:39Point is, I thought it'd be kind of fun to come to Boise, Idaho.
02:42Build a choo-choo.
02:44Trains have been, and still are, the backbone of this country.
02:48About 43% of everything in the typical home has been on a train at one time or another.
02:55Motive Power is an industry leader.
02:57Not only in building locomotives from the ground up, but also rebuilding and refurbishing older locomotives to near new condition.
03:03More than 2,500 locomotives have been delivered from Motive Power's facility since 1972.
03:09All right, so this is the fabrication building.
03:15I was just in the undercarriage buildup area, and I've come over here to a different bay to talk about the airco table.
03:23And this is Dan?
03:24Yes.
03:25Airco table, right?
03:26Yes, airco table.
03:27Airco is the manufacturer of the machine.
03:29What the machine actually is, is a plasma CNC burn table.
03:33I mean, what stage in the process do you do?
03:35This is the very first stage of the locomotive.
03:37This is the raw material coming in.
03:40Us making product to be, starting to be assembled in through the welding, through the assembly mechanics.
03:46You're talking about raw steel?
03:47Raw steel.
03:48Right now we're going to be working on some under-frame parts, which is part of the locomotive frame assembly itself.
03:54Why are your glasses seemingly more sophisticated than mine?
03:57Because mine are what we call here Batman glasses.
04:00What this does is it seals around your eyes to get a better fit to keep debris out of your eyes.
04:06Where we deal with lots of grinding, other particles in the air, we actually have to have something around our eyes to seal up better.
04:13And we also use spaceman helmets.
04:16Again, what this does is it protects debris from hitting you.
04:19So this is, no kidding, a hazardous place?
04:21This is, no kidding, a very hazardous place.
04:23All right.
04:24Where should we begin?
04:25We'll walk right between the tables here.
04:27And what we're going to do to start with, we're going to move the whole carriage down to our plate.
04:31Carriage meaning this orange guy, it's all attached.
04:33The gantry, this whole thing.
04:35So all we've got to do is pull there and walk with it.
04:38What's a machine like this run you?
04:40I would assume this would be a quarter million dollars plus machine.
04:43Right, so you went and out, go to the quarter million.
04:44Yes.
04:45Everything costs a quarter million dollars nowadays.
04:46What?
04:47Okay, what you were doing is you were moving both at one time.
04:49Oh!
04:50And you almost crashed into the wall, which isn't good.
04:53That's $5,000 torch.
04:54$5,000 or a quarter million.
04:56So we don't want to crash in.
04:58No.
04:59So this actual job, what we're about to do, what's that called?
05:02We're actually going to use plasma to burn out these parts.
05:06And what we're going to do is go right to about, see the X marks right there on the sheet?
05:10X marks the spot.
05:11X marks the spot.
05:12We have a program.
05:17This is what our part's going to look like.
05:20We actually have four parts.
05:21This machine is going to cut where all the yellow lines are?
05:25No.
05:26Where all the red lines are.
05:27And it's going to just travel where the yellow lines are.
05:30So this will take about 15 minutes to cut this whole thing out.
05:33We better start cutting.
05:34There we go.
05:35Oh, my goodness.
05:36You probably shouldn't be looking right at that, right?
05:37It's pretty bright.
05:38It's almost hypnotic.
05:39In all cases, you'll just be able to set the magnet on it like that.
05:56And usually, it'll keep it from falling down in there.
05:58That's a magnet?
05:59Yes, it's a magnet.
06:01But we also have to check to make sure the slag doesn't spark right at us.
06:06Right.
06:09Sometimes the slag will want to build right up on the nozzle.
06:12So when it's traveling to the next spot, we want to clear that to make sure it doesn't do that.
06:27There's really not much to do once you hit the thing.
06:29Once you hit the go, it's going to cut it.
06:31That's the nice thing about a CNC machine.
06:34It runs automatic, and it's going to cut across it, and that part will be done.
06:38Now it's going to come up, and it's going to start the next one.
06:43Every time it stops, I go in and I knock some of this off.
06:58I'm working.
06:59That's it.
07:00Go up.
07:01We go up a little slow.
07:02Once the pieces have been cut, they're removed from the cutting table with the help of a crane-supported electromagnet.
07:07Forward, forward, forward.
07:08Sorry, it's out.
07:09It's out.
07:10And what we want to try to do is stop that swing.
07:11So now we want to come west.
07:12Okay.
07:13That's good.
07:14Then just come down to the table.
07:15Okay.
07:16I think I got it.
07:17And we'll go back and pick up the other three of them.
07:18Operating the device is the same.
07:19That's it.
07:20That's it.
07:21Go up.
07:22We go up a little slow.
07:23Once the pieces have been cut, they're removed from the cutting table with the help of a crane-supported
07:25electromagnet.
07:26Forward, forward, forward.
07:27Sorry, it's out.
07:28It's out.
07:29And what we want to try to do is stop that swing.
07:30So now we want to come west.
07:31Okay.
07:32That's good.
07:33Then just come down to the table.
07:34Okay.
07:35I think I got it.
07:36Okay.
07:37I think I got it.
07:38And we'll go back and pick up the other three of them.
07:43Operating the device is kind of a fluid, sophisticated dance between man and machine.
07:49I mean, that probably weighs a bunch.
08:00Yeah.
08:01This here will weigh, this is probably still seven, eight hundred pounds.
08:05Okay.
08:06Moving the super heavy remaining piece is like a dance between man and weapon.
08:10Yeah, that's not too dangerous at all.
08:12Yeah.
08:13Really bad, once you get this load swinging around, it does really bad things.
08:16It can swing into someone else, into a machine.
08:19So what we're going to do is we're just going to bring it right over here, then we're going
08:21to lay it down right here.
08:22We're going to lay it down on these two stickers.
08:24Okay.
08:25Okay.
08:26And we'll go ahead and start lowering it down.
08:27Right.
08:28We're going to go north a little bit more.
08:29That's good.
08:30Down.
08:31Okay.
08:32Okay.
08:33And our part's going to start laying down.
08:36Okay.
08:37So we just come down.
08:38Now we want to follow it with the crane.
08:40Uh, that's west.
08:41Yes.
08:42See what we did?
08:43See where our crane is like this?
08:44Yeah.
08:45Right.
08:46So we can drag it off.
08:47Now we're done with our crane.
08:52Now this is all the stuff that comes out of the bottom of that kerf.
08:56This is the, this is kerf residue.
08:59Yes.
09:00Goes molten.
09:01Once it hits the water, it cools, makes you a little island.
09:03How do you get the kerf residue out?
09:05We have three tools.
09:06Like a garden hoe, different type of garden hoe, and then a spade.
09:11Great.
09:12We just start in here and we break it up.
09:15Then we use it.
09:16We use the hoe and the rake to be able to move it.
09:19Right.
09:20Over to that side there.
09:22In the trough there, there's some trays.
09:24Where's the tray?
09:25Right here.
09:26These here.
09:27Okay.
09:28Again, we'll be using the crane.
09:29The crane will be coming over there.
09:30Yep.
09:31All right.
09:32So the idea is to get all this junk in here.
09:33Into there.
09:34You have another one of those spades?
09:35Yep.
09:36We got several of them.
09:37Great.
09:38Break them out.
09:39Coming up.
09:40Up.
09:41Down.
09:42Down.
09:43Hilt forward.
09:44Up.
09:45Up.
09:46When directions are coming at you like a freight train.
09:47Now go down.
09:48Yeah.
09:49Hilt forward.
09:50Hilt forward.
09:51Tight shift the other way.
09:52You just want to kick the schmutz out of something.
09:53That's what I'm talking about.
09:54And later.
09:55Take your pick, whatever size ear canals you have.
09:56I never knew the importance of ear canal size.
09:58It looks like a big canal.
09:59Until I met the blaster.
10:00Curf residue looks a whole lot like other stuff I've scraped.
10:1520 years?
10:16Yep.
10:17How do you work your way up to here?
10:18Grinding.
10:19Beveling.
10:20It takes hours to do this, right?
10:21Yeah.
10:22This will take about three hours to clean both these tables out.
10:23Who's this guy?
10:24This is Ray.
10:25He's bringing in a dumpster to empty the stuff out from here into the dumpster so we can
10:38send it to the recycler.
10:39Is it full?
10:40Well, it could get a little fuller.
10:42Aren't you normally up here doing this?
10:44Uh, sometimes.
10:45I do it a little bit different, but...
10:47How do you do it?
10:48Easier.
10:49I flip it over with a forklift.
10:51He flips it over with a forklift.
10:52That's how he does it.
10:53Goes quicker my way.
10:55How long have you been here?
10:56Me?
10:5731 years.
10:58How long have you been here?
10:5921.
11:00Almost 21.
11:0121, 31?
11:02Go with 31.
11:03There you go.
11:04I'm just saying.
11:05I don't know much about locomotives, but I can add.
11:06All right.
11:07Well, let's dump one of these in.
11:08Get a little bit on that and then we dump it, eh?
11:09All right.
11:13Give me that rake over there, Sullivan.
11:17You guys on a last name basis?
11:18Yeah, we're pretty much on a last name basis.
11:21You don't want to get too friendly out here.
11:23No.
11:24No, that's the last thing you want on the job.
11:25Yeah, yeah.
11:26Is that weird level of forced familiarity.
11:28So how many locomotives had over the years, if you had to guess?
11:31Several hundred.
11:32Yeah.
11:33I built them under frames over there where you were this morning.
11:36Yeah, I saw you over there.
11:37Yeah, you looked kind of annoyed when I saw you first.
11:39Well, I was just making sure you didn't fall off my under frame.
11:41I stumble a lot, but I never fall.
11:43I say you're good, Sullivan.
11:45That's enough of that crap.
11:46That's what I like.
11:47That's the kind of thing I'm looking for on a t-shirt.
11:49There you go.
11:54Put some of the water on out there.
11:55Right.
11:56No sense in messing up the floor.
11:57Let's let it turn, Mike.
11:58Kind of get it in the middle of the dumpster here.
11:59Okay.
12:00Good.
12:01Okay.
12:02Now what we're going to do is we've got to pop these loose.
12:03Gotcha.
12:04Okay.
12:05Okay.
12:06Okay.
12:07Now what we're going to do is we've got to pop these loose.
12:11Gotcha.
12:12Okay.
12:13Okay.
12:14Now what we're going to do is we've got to pop these loose.
12:15Gotcha.
12:16Okay.
12:17Okay.
12:18Okay.
12:19Now pull your two outside once clear off.
12:20What else are pry bars good for?
12:21There you go.
12:22There you go.
12:23Turn it into a hammer.
12:24Okay.
12:25Now the bottom is going to come open.
12:26So my hands should be out of the way.
12:27Yeah.
12:28Yeah.
12:29Like that, right?
12:30That's why I don't do it this way.
12:31Okay.
12:32Okay.
12:33Okay.
12:34Now the bottom is going to come open.
12:36So my hands should be out of the way.
12:38Yeah.
12:39Yeah.
12:40Like that, right?
12:41That's why I don't do it this way.
12:44I think this will do it.
12:47Yep.
12:48Doing things Ray's way may not, in fact, be easier or safer, but it sure sounds like
12:56more fun.
12:57Why don't you haul it over there with this forklift?
13:00Then I got a hot rod one over there we can use to flip it with.
13:03Sure.
13:04Up.
13:05Up.
13:06Up.
13:07Up.
13:08Up.
13:09Up.
13:10Up and back up.
13:11Back up.
13:12He's got shift.
13:13Now down.
13:14Down.
13:15Okay.
13:16Tilt forward.
13:17Okay.
13:18Up.
13:19Side shift over.
13:20Third lever.
13:21Put your transmission in neutral so you can gas it up.
13:22Right-o.
13:23Now come up.
13:24Tilt back.
13:25Now side shift this way.
13:26Side shift.
13:27Neutral.
13:28Keep going.
13:29Give it a little gas.
13:30Yeah.
13:31Now go down.
13:32Tilt forward.
13:33Tilt forward.
13:34Okay.
13:35You're good to go.
13:36Got it.
13:37Taking a wild guess, but we going that way?
13:39Yep.
13:40We're going this way, Mike.
13:41One foot on the gas.
13:42One on the brake.
13:46What did one polar bear say to the other polar bear?
13:49I'm freezing.
13:50Should we just grab it and give it a toss?
13:51Well, yeah.
13:52You want me to do it the first time so you got it, or you just got it?
14:06We're going to bring the forklifts over here and we're going to hook it under here and
14:09we're going to come up and roll forward.
14:11Yeah.
14:12We're just going to let it go.
14:13Kabam.
14:14I love it.
14:15You got it?
14:16This little turbo guy?
14:17This little turbo guy.
14:19Yeah.
14:20Okay.
14:21Now you just got to go up and forward.
14:25Up and forward.
14:26That's complicated.
14:27Mike, come forward.
14:28Come forward.
14:29Hang on.
14:34That's probably not what you had in mind, was it?
14:38No, that wasn't.
14:39It's almost as if I don't know what I'm doing.
14:42Okay.
14:43Slow down now.
14:44Slow down.
14:45Come on up.
14:46Sorry, I got excited, but I got very excited.
14:47Come on up.
14:48Keep coming up.
14:49Forward.
14:50Forward and up.
14:51Forward and up.
14:52There you go.
14:53All right.
14:55Oh, nice.
14:56We just knocked all that crap off.
14:57Now let's get her back right side up.
14:59Get up.
15:03Gotcha.
15:11Okay.
15:12Forward.
15:13Forward.
15:14Let her go.
15:19Hey, my table's clean.
15:20There's still some schmutz in it.
15:21Yeah, we'd flip her three or four more times.
15:23Let's flip her again then.
15:24You like it, yes.
15:25I can't get enough of this.
15:26I'll be honest with you, Ray.
15:27Let's go back from that side.
15:29You got it.
15:30One more time over, upside down.
15:32One more time right side up.
15:33Roger.
15:34Then I call it.
15:35Travel forward and up.
15:36There you go.
15:37You got it.
15:42That's what I'm talking about.
15:44Beat shoveling, doesn't it?
15:45You ain't lying.
15:46With any luck, you'll have to do it two more times.
15:50A fella can dream, Kenny.
15:52Go down.
15:55Well, that's something you don't see every day.
15:57No, it isn't.
15:58Go down.
15:59Down, down, down.
16:00No, down.
16:01Just testing.
16:02There you go.
16:04So then, the stuff that I cut, and by me I mean while I stood there and watched the machine
16:10do the work.
16:11Yes, sir.
16:12That needs to go on the part of the locomotive I was walking on this morning.
16:16Yes, sir.
16:17Can you help me get that in there?
16:19Sure.
16:20Let's do that.
16:22All right.
16:23It's all coming back to me.
16:24That's what I started on.
16:26Yes, sir.
16:27And that's a locomotive for a commuter train.
16:30Commuter under frame.
16:31And this is what exactly?
16:33A switcher under frame.
16:34And what's the difference?
16:35Well, you'll notice it has a very heavy plate.
16:38It's a lot heavier.
16:39It's 12, 14 feet shorter.
16:41Right.
16:42Doesn't have as big an engine as this.
16:45Oh, now this looks very familiar.
16:47This is your bolster extension you burnt this morning.
16:50And what's its actual purpose?
16:51It's an extension off the frame and a big jack pad like you would put on your car.
16:58Pick the locomotive up.
17:00Why would you have to pick the locomotive up?
17:02Well, we might have to change the wheels on it or change the trucks.
17:05Change the tires.
17:06Change the tires.
17:07And once the locomotive is in this condition, what's the next step after that?
17:11Blast and prime.
17:12And that's a whole other area?
17:14Completely different building.
17:16I could freeze to death out there on a day like this.
17:18Well, you'll have to walk fast.
17:19Is it that direction?
17:20That direction.
17:21Yes, sir.
17:22Absolute pleasure.
17:23Thanks, Mike.
17:24Thank you very much.
17:25Thanks a lot.
17:27All right.
17:28I'm going to go do some blasting.
17:29You guys take five.
17:30Take a break.
17:31Don't work so hard.
17:32You got 31 years in, okay?
17:33Yeah.
17:34Relax.
17:35Slacker.
17:36Coming up.
17:38After I meet the mind-numbing blaster.
17:41You should ask for a raise.
17:42The skull-cracking noise of an impact wrench is music to my ears.
17:48And later.
17:49I just caught the lip on the backside.
17:51We've got to be careful.
17:52It's a good thing I'm not on payroll.
17:54We can snap a power assembly or shoot the skyrocketing.
17:56That'd be bad.
17:57That'd be real bad.
17:58Come on up.
18:10This would be the blasting place.
18:11Yes, it is.
18:12And you're Lester.
18:13Yes, I am.
18:14I'm Mike.
18:15How you do?
18:16And in there is the actual, where the blasting takes place?
18:19Yes, it is.
18:20We come in through the center door.
18:22We're suited up now.
18:23Right.
18:24And we'll go over to this.
18:25This is the blast hose.
18:26So this all needs to get, are we sand blasting or what are we, what's coming out of here?
18:30We're grit blasting.
18:31This is, this is grit.
18:35Instead of sand, it's actually iron filings is what it is.
18:38Yeah.
18:39And it scars the metal or takes off the mill scale and makes some paintable surface.
18:43So that's the point of doing this.
18:45You want, right now paint wouldn't stick to it.
18:47Not very well.
18:48And it takes off this scale here and takes off rust and makes a surface that paint adheres to a lot more efficiently.
18:57So we're roughing it up.
18:58Exactly.
18:59Yes, we are.
19:00Okay.
19:01I don't know how the head thing is going to fit you.
19:06How's the head?
19:07Is it adjustable up there?
19:08Yeah.
19:09I think it could be a little looser.
19:10Okay.
19:11Yeah.
19:12This guy that wears this has got a small head.
19:13Yeah.
19:14That's not me.
19:15Try that, Mike.
19:16See if it fits you.
19:18But before we blast, I need for you to put a steady ear, ear, ear plugs in.
19:25Take your pick, whatever size ear canals you have.
19:27You know, I never measured them.
19:29What size are your ear canals?
19:30Large.
19:31Does it look like a big canal?
19:33Medium?
19:34Oh, there you go.
19:35Since the particle-filled air in the blasting room is virtually unbreathable, air supply hoses
19:47are connected to the helmets.
19:49The mill scale the grit blasting removes is surface waste generated by rolling and extruding
20:05steel.
20:06It's about 70% iron.
20:07If the surface of the locomotive structure isn't blasted and roughed up, paint will have
20:12a tendency to peel right off.
20:14Not a good look.
20:16Wearing the suit is almost a complete sensory experience.
20:20It's difficult to see what you're doing.
20:22I can't hear a thing.
20:23Nobody can hear me.
20:24It's claustrophobic, and I'm comfortable to move around it.
20:28Inside, there's the overpowering smell of worn leather mixed with sweat.
20:32Not all of which is my own.
20:34The only one of the five senses not affected is taste, which is nice.
20:39But I would love to get out of here, but I just have no idea where the door is or what
20:46I'm looking at.
20:51I don't know what they pay you.
20:56You should ask for a raise.
20:57I'm used to it.
20:58I enjoy it.
20:59Do you really?
21:00Yeah.
21:01Where does your mind go when you're doing that?
21:03You can go anywhere you want, but you better like who you're in that helmet with.
21:07That's a fact.
21:09I'm going to wander off, find another building, find another guy doing another thing.
21:13Great.
21:14I should probably put this back in its place.
21:15I can take care of it.
21:16You got it?
21:17Yeah.
21:18Pleasure meeting you.
21:19It was nice meeting you, Mike.
21:20Don't let it get to you in there.
21:21I won't.
21:22There are few things on earth, more mind-numbing on a blaster.
21:25I'm hoping the engine refurbishing shop isn't one of them.
21:32So we're off to another building.
21:33The building in question is called the Annex.
21:36It's just right around the corner, which around here means a little over a mile away.
21:40So we're going to go ahead and drive.
21:45We're going to take the train, but it's not running.
21:55I'm pretty sure that's a big old engine.
21:58Fairly sure this is one, too.
22:01Hey, guys.
22:02Hey.
22:03How are you?
22:04All righty.
22:05I'm good.
22:06I'm Mike.
22:07Freddie.
22:08Freddie.
22:09Rodney.
22:10Rodney, Freddie, and Rodney.
22:11We'll shake later.
22:12You guys look like you're...
22:13Freddie and Rodney are in the thick of it.
22:14What exactly are you doing, Rodney?
22:16Oh, we got a damaged pan, and we're getting ready to do a complete rebuild on this block.
22:20Looks like...
22:21What happened there?
22:22Throw a rod or something?
22:23It shot a rod right out.
22:26That's a rod.
22:27That's a rod.
22:28Now, all engines have rods, but that's just bigger than your average rod.
22:31A lot bigger than the average rod.
22:33That is a rod.
22:34This is a cylinder hole, and we're going to rebuild.
22:36How old is the engine?
22:37Do you know?
22:38We'll go with serial number off a block in the corner, but the last time this was rebuilt
22:42was back in...
22:43This was actually built in 97.
22:45So we're going to pull out a dirty version of this and these?
22:48Yep.
22:49All right.
22:50Just a socket and a socket on the backside.
22:52One spins, the other one locks it.
22:54Ready to rumble.
22:57Uh-oh.
22:58Just a bolt falling in the band.
22:59Doesn't bother you?
23:00Nope.
23:01We'll never see it again.
23:02We'll...
23:03Okay, now, take this socket.
23:09Take the two bolts on top.
23:12Some locomotive engines need to be rebuilt to extend their life.
23:15It takes about 90 hours to completely disassemble an engine and prepare it for cleaning.
23:24There's your bearing.
23:26So that's done.
23:27Then we go up here and take the whole power out, the whole assembly out.
23:30All right.
23:31All right.
23:32Coming up...
23:33Mike, try never to walk under the load.
23:35Good tip.
23:36Great.
23:37Thanks, Rod.
23:38A 13-ton engine.
23:39Kind of gets away from me.
23:40Ah, we hit east instead of west.
23:41Damn it.
23:42Is that too much, Rodney?
23:43A little bit rocking and rolling.
23:44At times like this, it'd be great to know what I'm doing.
23:55Well, you want to take her north first.
23:57That's north.
23:58All right.
23:59There you go.
24:01The power assembly consists of a cylinder, valves, and piston.
24:04The fuel explosions that power the locomotive take place inside these assemblies.
24:09Okay.
24:10Down.
24:11No, go ahead.
24:12Come on up.
24:13We just caught the lip on the backside.
24:14We've got to be careful.
24:15Because on the backside lip here, catch here, we can snap a power assembly or shoot this skyrocketing
24:19in the air.
24:20That'd be bad.
24:21That'd be real bad.
24:22Come on up.
24:29Just removed your cylinder.
24:30Power assembly.
24:31All right.
24:32And this thing has one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, sixteen?
24:35Sixteen of them.
24:36Well, obviously.
24:37It's a locomotive.
24:38It's got to drag the whole train.
24:39You need power.
24:40Sixteen cylinder now, the way we're building now, are more horsepower than a twenty cylinder.
24:43Why?
24:44Better compression, new design.
24:46Cool.
24:47All right.
24:48So what do you do now?
24:49We're going to take her north and we're going to drop them in the crate right down there.
24:53This particular engine produces 3,800 horsepower, about 15 times more than the average passenger
24:58car.
24:59Are you going to send this back or what?
25:01We'll send this out in the yard and normally we'll either send them out for scrap or we'll
25:06have another company actually buy these huge units.
25:10We rebuild some, but it's contract specific.
25:16Now we'll get ready to remove the other side.
25:18On any given week, between one and three engines are upgraded here, modernizing locomotives
25:27at a considerable savings to Motive Power's customers compared to buying a brand new engine.
25:33Your next step we're going to do, we're going to be removing bolts that hold our block
25:37and pan together.
25:38Block and pan.
25:39Block and pan.
25:40This is your block assembly.
25:41That's your pan.
25:42All right.
25:48Nothing.
25:49Nothing.
25:50Nope, nothing.
25:51Here you go, Mike.
25:52Show us your strength.
25:53Holy smokes.
25:54Step back.
25:55I got a cheater bar.
25:56I can't get a bite on it, you know?
25:57See if you can get a bite through the window right here.
25:58There you go.
25:59There you go.
26:00There you go.
26:01There you go.
26:02You got it moving a little bit.
26:03Is this helpful at all?
26:04It's helping.
26:05Only problem is the way you're tightening, not loosening.
26:06Yeah.
26:07I'm tightening it?
26:08I'm tightening it?
26:09No.
26:10No.
26:11No.
26:12No.
26:13No.
26:14No.
26:15No.
26:16No.
26:17No.
26:18No.
26:19No.
26:20No.
26:21No.
26:22No.
26:23No.
26:24No.
26:25No.
26:26No.
26:27No.
26:28No.
26:29I'm tightening it?
26:30You're tightening it.
26:31You need to pull this direction.
26:32Why?
26:33You're just...
26:34You're kidding.
26:35No.
26:36You're tightening it.
26:37Righty, tighty, lefty, loosey.
26:38Well, man, man.
26:39The two experts just watched me tighten this thing beyond.
26:41I just...
26:42I just noticed what direction he was turning.
26:48You got a little thing you flip here?
26:49Like this thing?
26:50Nope.
26:51Just turn your hair around and start pulling in that direction.
26:54Go ahead.
26:59There you go.
27:00All right.
27:01That's not better.
27:02That's just a basic...
27:03That's a math problem, that's all.
27:09Now the other side.
27:10Two to go.
27:14That's that.
27:15Just gonna scrape it.
27:16Pick your choosing.
27:18Now we're getting ready to scrape all this burnt oil, I call it.
27:21Off here or off the inside?
27:22Inside.
27:23Wanna scrape all this inside.
27:24Oh, boy.
27:25Oh, boy.
27:30The sludge inside a well-worn engine is carbon and oil residue, which over time can cause an engine to run hotter and possibly fail.
27:41Okay.
27:42Now we're getting to the part that would tear the unit down four.
27:44Split and block the pan.
27:46Split the block and the pan.
27:47Yep.
27:48That's gonna take a crane.
27:49It's gonna take a crane.
27:50How much did it weigh?
27:51I'm gonna say 2,300 pounds.
27:53How about 23,000?
27:54That sounds closer.
27:59Slowly.
28:00You like that?
28:01Yep.
28:02This is the biggest thing I've lifted all day, I think.
28:03When an engine's rebuilt, bearings, power assemblies, crankshafts, gears, and injectors will all be replaced.
28:08Get them all?
28:09Yep.
28:10We're gonna go that way, then west.
28:12This way, and then around?
28:14Yeah, we're gonna go south, and then west, and then come back.
28:16All right.
28:18Jeez.
28:19Mike, try never to walk under the load.
28:22Good tip.
28:23Great.
28:24Thanks, Rod.
28:27Okay, take her north.
28:28North.
28:32Is that too much, Rodney?
28:33A little bit rocking and rolling.
28:35Am I killing you?
28:36At times like this, it'd be great to know what I'm doing.
28:39All right.
28:40Come on down a little bit.
28:41Take her west.
28:42Ah, we just hit east instead of west.
28:44Damn it.
28:45Center of the cart.
28:46Working on that.
28:47Take her north.
28:48A little bit more.
28:49See, when they get greasy like this, you can't see up, down, north, south, east, west.
28:53Nothing.
28:54They all just look like black dots.
28:55Bring her west a little, Mike.
28:56West.
28:57Who knows?
28:58There we go.
28:59Okay.
29:00Let's get the swing out and we'll lower it.
29:01I can't remember.
29:02Look at them.
29:03They're all the same color.
29:05Down.
29:06Up.
29:07Here we go.
29:08Okay.
29:09Okay.
29:10Coming up.
29:11Oh my God, where'd the light go?
29:15Everybody starts shooting everything at once because it's going to be dark and then we
29:18don't have to show.
29:19When you mix chaos, danger, darkness, and toxic chemicals.
29:22That'll basically turn you into a puddle of snot if it gets on you.
29:25It certainly will.
29:26All right.
29:27So we've come to that part of the day.
29:28It's my favorite part.
29:29It's called the dirty jobs.
29:30Oh my God, where'd the light go?
29:31Everybody starts shooting everything at once because it's going to be dark and then
29:32we don't have to show.
29:33So this big giant top part of the engine is going to come out and even larger crane is
29:49going to hook to it.
29:50It's going to rise into the air and then if everything goes as planned, we're going to
29:54swing it over here and it's going to go inside this thing that starts with a P, but I can't
29:58remember the name.
29:59It's like a Parsmer or a Petron or a Paducal.
30:01A Prosecco.
30:02It's a Prosecco.
30:03Okay.
30:04I just got a quick look inside there.
30:06It's very cool.
30:07We'll try and show you that too before it gets too dark.
30:09But basically we're going to watch 27,000 pound engine like a chicken on a rotisserie spinning
30:14around.
30:15This is Wilmer and this is Robert, right?
30:17Right.
30:18All right.
30:19You run the crane?
30:20You want to?
30:21Yes, we are.
30:22I'll do whatever you let me do.
30:23Go ahead.
30:24Up.
30:25Up.
30:26Down.
30:27East.
30:28West.
30:29All right.
30:30Here we go.
30:31When an engine is rebuilt, all the reusable parts are cleaned by being submerged in a powerful
30:34liquid detergent.
30:35The engine block is given something that's more like a shower.
30:39Okay.
30:40Good.
30:41There you go.
30:42Right there.
30:43Perfect.
30:44Perfect.
30:45What we need to do next is get the second stand in place for the rear.
30:51For the rear.
30:52You're going to go right into that hole there.
30:54And we're good to go.
30:56And it'll be pumping the same cleaner that we used for both.
31:01Snap it down.
31:02And this pumps oil.
31:03It pumps the cleaning solution through the oil galley.
31:06And what is the solution again?
31:08Positive 170.
31:09And that'll basically turn you into a puddle of snot if it gets on you?
31:12It certainly will.
31:13Opened it one morning.
31:14Found a glove, a bottle and a light bulb in here.
31:16So some drunk had a bright idea.
31:17I guess.
31:18He is the man.
31:19So when this thing is really getting washed, I mean, you've got to close the top.
31:23Yep.
31:24Absolutely.
31:25And we'll show you.
31:26We're able to show you how the rotisserie works.
31:27That's what I want to see.
31:28But we can't run the spray bar running, obviously, because you'd have that bottle and...
31:33Yeah, we'd be evaporated.
31:34Maybe for our final episode.
31:35There you go.
31:36There you go.
31:37Tune in.
31:38Next Tuesday.
31:39Very special.
31:40Dirty jobs.
31:41Now you see them?
31:42No, you don't.
31:43Just like that.
31:44How long have you been here, Wilmer?
31:45Sixteen years.
31:46What did you do before this?
31:47Twenty years in retail.
31:48Grocery.
31:49Which do you like better?
31:50Building models.
31:51From grocery retail to washing engine blocks.
31:54The secret passion for building giant models.
31:57I really realized one day I just couldn't stand people anymore.
32:01Okay.
32:02That's good.
32:03Have you met Barsky?
32:04You guys are going to get along great.
32:06Can't stand people anymore.
32:07Oh.
32:08Oh.
32:09Oh.
32:10Oh.
32:11Yeah.
32:12You know what you are, Robert?
32:13You're a misanthrope.
32:14You're a people hater.
32:15Well, there's...
32:16Oh, no.
32:17There's people here that have other names for him, too, but we won't mention that.
32:20Okay.
32:21On.
32:22He's out of there, right?
32:23You're not in there, Robert.
32:24I'm right here.
32:25The last thing I want to do is chew up a misanthrope.
32:27Right there you go.
32:30There you go.
32:31And this is the top speed for the rotating?
32:33Yep.
32:34That's the speed.
32:35All right.
32:36Well, I'm thinking we got the idea here.
32:37It spins around.
32:38Okay.
32:39Let's close the lids.
32:40Stay clear.
32:41Come on, everybody.
32:43The spray bar.
32:45The spray cycle will not turn on until it closes it.
32:48Do I have to keep my finger on here or will it go?
32:50No.
32:51You're fine.
32:52It's pretty cold out here, man.
32:53Oh, no.
32:54Come on.
32:57No.
32:59Okay.
33:00Hear the click, wash, cycle.
33:02You're going to watch that bar there.
33:03Hit it.
33:04There it goes.
33:05Now, what's happened?
33:06Is this toxic?
33:07No.
33:08The steam won't, no.
33:09And what we normally do is we'll stand here and watch.
33:11Make sure it goes a full cycle so we know nothing's jammed.
33:14Nothing's falling in there to rock it up.
33:16Right.
33:17So that thing's getting clean.
33:19Right now it's four or four and a half hours.
33:22What will you guys be doing during that crucial period?
33:26Back in there tearing again.
33:27Tearing them apart.
33:28Tearing them apart.
33:29Getting them ready to put it back together.
33:30Where does all of this actually get assembled?
33:32I've seen so many buildings but I still don't have a sense of where it comes together.
33:35The finished shop is the place to go.
33:37That would be an interesting place for me to go now?
33:39Yes, it would.
33:40You guys on overtime now, by the way?
33:41Yes.
33:42This good, right?
33:43Yes.
33:44You want to stick around and chat a little more?
33:46Sure.
33:47Sure.
33:48It's nice to meet you.
33:49Nice to meet you.
33:50Yeah, appreciate it.
33:51Thanks for not dissolving me down there.
33:53You're welcome.
33:54Alrighty.
33:55Coming up, when you're trying to put a complicated shot together, sometimes tempers get short.
33:59Thank you for telling me that I had plenty of time to look at it, but I did not.
34:02He's fighting.
34:03He is.
34:04It's moments like this on the 200th job that bring a real sense of satisfaction.
34:08Okay, wait, hold on a second.
34:09I'm fine.
34:10Pride.
34:11And hope for the future.
34:12Kind of makes you want to toot your own horn.
34:15Out of my way, sinners.
34:18Right and early the next morning, the crew and I set up to shoot the big finish to the
34:30story.
34:31Inappropriately, the finish shop.
34:32We never do this.
34:33We're shooting, this is the second day on one shoot.
34:37Haven't done this in a long time, but we want to get a specific shot.
34:40So, we've come back to make it all happen.
34:44Doug, in search of that elusive Emmy, has somehow got himself all the way up there.
34:50Risking life and limb and an almost certain concussion to get the shot of his career.
34:54I'm here to help.
34:56Getting the big shot sometimes requires the complicated coordination of all kinds of things
35:01that can sometimes lead to a little edginess.
35:04Thank you for telling me that I had plenty of time to look at it, but I did not, because
35:07I was trying different sizes to see where.
35:09He is.
35:11Complicated shots often have to be prepped and rehearsed, with time-consuming, almost
35:16mind-altering tedium.
35:18You'd think that after 200 jobs, we'd kind of have this routine streamlined.
35:23On right next to the yellow line then?
35:25Nope.
35:26On that side of the train or on the opposite side of the train?
35:29The whole life-sucking process messes with your head in ways that aren't very productive.
35:34Huge pieces of your life that you can never get back just vanish in the thin air.
35:39Then, when you're almost finished fooling around, the place shuts down for lunch.
35:44They're not going to be back for half an hour, so we can't afford that.
35:46No, we all have that kind of time.
35:48Doug, which is worse for you personally?
35:51Not shooting this shot after you've taken the time to set it up, or shooting it and
35:55not having it used at all in the edit page?
35:57Neither.
35:58I thought you said you had it under control, and I told you that a while ago.
36:02If you've just joined us, we've just spent the last, um, an hour trying to set up a shot,
36:07and we finally got the shot just right to match with an earlier shot that Troy took,
36:10and now everybody's going to lunch in this giant train factory.
36:13They're all gone.
36:14The shot's unusable.
36:15But Doug is so deeply vested in the process, and we all, you know, knowing one another and
36:20caring, don't want to snatch that kind of soul-deadening potential disappointment away from him.
36:28So we're, you know, we're just trying to keep the peace.
36:31That's so terrible.
36:32Then, a miracle.
36:33The crane operator postpones his tuna salad sandwich so he can shoot.
36:36Okay, you can roll.
36:38Here it is.
36:39It's going to be great.
36:40It's going to be great.
36:41Wait until you see how these shots cut together.
36:43Notice how nobody's in Doug's and everybody's in the other one.
36:46You're going to love it.
36:47You'll see.
36:48The assembly line here at Motive Power is a lot like any other assembly line.
36:53It just moves a lot slower.
36:55The engine I work on is going to look a lot like that engine right there 14 days from now.
37:00And then every seven days, the entire line moves.
37:04But because everything is connected, everything's got to move at the same time.
37:09Which is why it's a busy place.
37:11In the end, after a whole lot of work and a lot of complicated stuff, I'm not even going to try and explain,
37:16a finished locomotive emerges somewhere down there.
37:20And somebody gets to drive it.
37:23Who could we get?
37:25You could get me.
37:27I'm available.
37:28Cool.
37:29Although these guys are real engineers, right, Gerald?
37:31Correct.
37:32And Carlos?
37:33Yes, sir.
37:34What do you do, Carlos?
37:35I do the fast track and prep the units for track test.
37:39And what do you do, Gerald?
37:40I'm just an overall test electrician.
37:42Okay.
37:43Are either of you qualified to make sure I don't run this thing off the tracks?
37:47Yes, we are.
37:48And it is true that you're actually going to let me drive a train?
37:50Yeah.
37:51Yes, sir.
37:52What a country.
37:53Look, they've even given me this.
37:55This is the key to the kingdom with my name on it.
37:59And I'm assuming, guys, this goes in here?
38:01Right there.
38:02So the key's in?
38:05Key's in.
38:06All you've got to do is fire it up.
38:08Push the start button.
38:09How does one fire it up exactly?
38:11Got a main engine start.
38:13Uh-huh.
38:14Push that button.
38:15It'll go through a startup process.
38:17Okay.
38:18Go ahead and go to forward.
38:19Forward.
38:20Move your little lever you put in there forward.
38:21This guy?
38:22Yep.
38:23Yeah.
38:24And there we go.
38:26Slow down, slow down, stopper.
38:39Forward all the way with the brake.
38:41Yep.
38:47I'm still in training.
38:49Now he's climbing up on the back of the thing.
38:54Okay.
38:55And he's saying, come on back.
38:56And off we go.
39:00How fast will this thing go if I wanted to really open her up?
39:03The over speed is set at 83.
39:05How fast will it go in reverse?
39:06Same sport.
39:07You go 83 miles an hour to reverse?
39:09Yes, sir.
39:10We don't do it here.
39:13You guys have any idea where we're going?
39:15Oh, yeah.
39:16Okay.
39:17Probably pretty good.
39:18I think this is good.
39:19Copy, Willie.
39:20We're good here.
39:21This goes to zero.
39:22Back up to idle.
39:23Yep.
39:24Zero.
39:25Put it in forward.
39:26Forward.
39:27Okay.
39:28Bring your throttle lever back to six.
39:33Just let it rev up and it'll start moving through the brakes.
39:38I'm going to turn your belt on.
39:40Blow your horn.
39:42Blow your horn a little bit.
39:46Out of my way, sinners.
39:48Yeah.
39:49All right, let's go.
39:51Oh...
39:52Oh!
39:53Oh.
39:54Oh!
39:55Oh!
39:56Oh!
39:57Oh!
39:58Oh!

40:46work was something to be celebrated when craftsmen and tradesmen were seen as role models personally
40:53for me the last 200 jobs have been consistently surprising in so far as they've been so much fun
41:01i just want to thank the guys up in boise for doing what it takes morning noon and night to
41:05help us get from here to there and i want to thank you for putting up with my shenanigans for these
41:09last 200 jobs i know from time to time it's been annoying like they say the first 200 are always
41:18the toughest see you for 201 all right boys you can celebrate back in season one i thought it'd be a
41:27good idea to ask people to send in their suggestions for dirty jobs because i wanted to involve you the
41:32viewer frankly it was a device we had plenty of ideas but in season two the reality caught up with
41:38us we were completely out of ideas and by season three we had become completely dependent on your
41:43willingness to go to discovery.com and suggest my next dirty adventure here in season four we've we've
41:48passed the point of desperation and i've come to a place in my own career where i'll do virtually
41:53anything to get you to go to discovery.com forward slash dirty jobs and suggest my next dirty adventure
42:01if you do that not only will i be grateful but i'd be willing in the future to uh
42:06meet
42:07dude look at your gloves where'd you get those man would you would you go the price is right
42:14would you what happened to you god you're bugged rivers point is after 200 dirty adventures it's
42:19enough to make a fellow want to celebrate and tonight that's exactly now and that's sorry
42:27and i want to thank you as well for listening as i forget most of the words i used to know and started
42:33grouping them up in new and exciting ways the fact that you continue to watch is something that's not
