Police say two teenage girls involved in a stabbing incident in Newcastle overnight were Chinese students visiting Australia as part of an educational program. A 14-year-old suffered a stab wound to her abdomen and died in hospital a 13-year-old remains in police custody.
00:00Police have confirmed that the two girls arrived in Australia from China just eight days ago on a student exchange program.
00:08They were due to go back home to China on the 16th of August.
00:12Now since being here they've been attending a local school and also getting out and about and seeing the sights of the Hunter region.
00:19While here they've been staying with a host family in the Lake Macquarie suburb of Edgeworth.
00:24The members of that household and adults male and female and the two girls were treated to their bedrooms last night according to police until one of the host members heard a commotion.
00:35She went to the 14 year old girls bedroom where she found her with a wound.
00:40Emergency services attended the scene at about 20 past 10 last night and they treated the 14 year old at the scene before taking her to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital where she died a short time later.
00:5213 year old girl at the scene was arrested and she's currently still helping police with their inquiries and no charges have been laid just yet.
01:01Now police say the 14 year old died from one stab wound and they're still looking into the circumstances what led up to this incident.
01:11They're saying it's a very complex situation obviously due to the girls age that they're not Australian students.
01:18So they're having to bring in a number of authorities to assist including translators as they continue this investigation.
01:27As you can imagine an investigation with young girls involved, language barriers, working through the consulate.
01:34They're not Australian residents obviously and so there are obvious complications and complexities with that which is why it's taken us some time to work through.
01:43They say that the young 13 year old girl is assisting with their inquiries but no charges have been laid just yet.
