00:00Bristol City Council has acted to remove vehicle dwellers from areas nearer school after evidence of drug dealing and antisocial behaviour was found, the council has said.
00:14Six vehicles were removed from Carlton Park in Redfield while another 13 were cleared from tramways in Brislington amid concerns about waste and abandoned vans.
00:27An estimated 650 people live in vehicles across Bristol, many citing the high cost of housing as a primary reason.
00:36The council is developing a policy aimed at improving conditions for vehicle dwellers and their neighbours.
00:43Barry Parsons, Chair of the Homes and Housing Delivery Committee, says the policy will offer support to those in genuine need, be citywide, constant and apply enforcement on a case-by-case basis.
00:56Engagement sessions with vehicle dwellers, local residents and public and charity sector partners highlighted the need for a fair, compassionate and proportionate approach, he added.
01:09As part of this, the council plans to create temporary meanwhile sites on land earmarked for future development.
01:17These sites would provide pictures with access to toilets and running water for a small fee.
01:22The council hopes to offer 250 pictures, with five sites already open and two more progressing well.
01:29Mr Parsons also said the council is exploring permanent sites for those seeking a more settled base.
01:37Tensions have grown between residents and vehicle dwellers near Dirdham Down.
