00:00Taiwan is closing in on a deal to purchase nearly 6 million tons of liquefied natural gas
00:05from the U.S. state of Alaska, according to the state's governor.
00:10We already have, and it's moving to an absolute solid offtake with Taiwan of 6 million tons of gas.
00:15Now that 6 million tons from Taiwan is the largest offtake in LNG history
00:19in terms of sales and purchase from one outfit.
00:24The gas would come from a new project to tap fossil fuels off Alaska's north slope.
00:29Natural gas accounts for about half of Taiwan's energy mix.
00:33Word of the deal comes after the U.S. announced it will levy a 20% tariff on most Taiwanese goods.
00:39President Lai Ching-ta says that tariff negotiations are ongoing,
00:42and Taipei is looking to secure a better deal from Washington.
